I have a portable generator that wouldn't start when needed so I ran the return pump off the inverter in my truck for 9 hours until the power came back on. Some folks were out for several days.

I am putting a whole house 22 kw natural gas generator on the house in March. Pricey but with 3 tanks full of fish and corals it is worth my peace of mind that it will work when needed.
Thats my backup to my backup contingency plan. Batteries dead, go to gennies, use up all the gas, can always idle the cummins out front lol.

Are those dewalt batteries clean? Recommend clean sine wave for $400 pumps.
Have you seen the battery box for the MP40. there is no inverter inside . just a battery meaning that they only put the 12v line to it. so i will do the same. Also read above. car much better idea.

If I remember correctly, DC shouldn't be an issue, it flows one way and doesn't produce the horrible sine wave AC can produce from flowing both directions.

Only problem I can see is if there is no voltage regulator, if the pumps can't handle 24v.

cheap battery in nice case just hooked up to a jack to fit into controler. no other parts. so expensive rip off.
I am not an electrician nor comfortable with risking a fire or failure of an emergency back up for the life support of my tank with a DIY project.

For me the product that has been made specifically to match with my mp40s, has a proven track record of use and is easily added to the system is worth the premium cost. Plug and play is a value to me. Brand new the Ecotech battery back up will cost about $225 that I was willing to pay.

Buck convertors and voltage regulators are pretty cheap and fun to play with.

Which is completely fine. Sometimes I don't have the time to DIY, other times

i'm right there with you, on not having the experience or knowledge to make your own.

can always check and see what getting one made for you would cost compared to ecotech box. @telegraham found a decent alternative: its also on ebay for much less (<120$)

I dont remember ever hearing of a 12v catch anything on fire unless the battery itself shorted out. In that case you add a fuse.
