@VintageReefer I'm local to that area (globally speaking). I'm roughly an hour away and get over there in my work every couple of weeks. If you haven't gotten a resolution in a few days, drop me a PM and we can figure out the best path forward. Maybe a phone call from a local # etc? I'm willing to help if I can.

For the record, Franklin, NC wasn't hit with the full force of Helene. The vast majority of the damage was EAST of that area. In fact, Balsam Mtn (the county line between Haywood and Jackson County NC) was pretty much Night & Day from one side to the other and Franklin is on the "other/good" side of the mountain. Here in Haywood County we were flooded, mud slides, and devastation but on the other side of the mountain creeks flooded but that's pretty much it and Franklin is even further away and less damage, most likely.

Feel free to give me a shout if I can help.

Everything is on the internet these days. I’d bet a quick Google search with name and address gets you a phone number, or at least an option to pay a couple bucks for it. The white pages used to be a thing.

@Vintage reefer I am so sorry to hear about this after you were so helpful and trusting.

As much as I'm the kind of guy that would be so freaking upset by this if it were me, I am reading your very measured responses, and I appreciate that you are giving this other reefer every out, excuse, and every chance for them to own up to this and make it right. You're coming across as a class act right now :) That does nothing to get your PAR meter back, but it goes a long way to showing your character here at R2R. Thanks for being a reefer and a human that I look up to!

I have seen your posts before, you've helped me in the past, and I know you're a very helpful and experienced reefer.

I noticed recently that someone who was really shaken/affected by the most recent storm in Florida who was looking to basically give away their tank after the storm, and you offered to send them corals out of your tank, and that is a class act, sir.

I am in NY, and cannot knock on this other reefer's door (and I wouldn't, as @revhtree just mentioned as I'm typing this - no doxing!). And, I don't yet have really nice frags that I could send you to help with your loss here, but I wish you the very best of luck!

I buy often and occasionally sell things on the R2R "for sale" forum, I have never had an issue, but I just hate to hear things like this :-(

What I do have is a dated Apogee 200 something PAR meter. I know this PAR meter is dated and not the best for our newer LED's (though there's a conversion formula)

I got my Apogee 200 PAR meter many years ago from Dave from Nano Box, who was very popular on NanoReef.

If this can help you, please let me know.

Best of luck, VR!

what is doxing??
A newer term we are dealing with in real life, not just a reefing thing.

"Doxing" refers to revealing people's personal information, such as their real name, address, occupation, etc.
It stems from releasing people's personal "documentation", thus "Doxing".

Thanks. I was wondering that too.

No good deed goes unpunished.
I have unfortunately adopted this saying based on myself being the nice guy the good guy and a lot of people just not caring and taking advantage. Friends and family members, strangers, doesnt matter. I am much more "mercenary" now you want something from me I want "this" first and I dont volunteer for anything anymore. I dont like it but thinking karma or maybe my good intensions will pay off later in life doesnt seem prudent.
Sorry this is going on hope it works out for you.
Isn't that the truth, rescued a badly bullied fish (supposedly QT'ed) and got ich in the DT.

I hope OP gets his par meter back.

Maybe the borrower has already gotten busy from the storm, perhaps sucked into the vortex, or rushed in to help out the injured?

These kinds of transactions and postings can be a lot of fun and hopefully there will be a positive resolution of the thing and no one gets injured.

When I come across a situation like this I am happy to serve divorce papers and other legal documents but I encourage everyone to go lightly since we don't really know the party responsible and what they are capable of or how tightly wound up they might be?

Tread softly and remember how good life is for you and be that towards others. If they take your stuff I say let them have it cause they will eventually see the judge, and I am not the judge.

Live long and Reefer?

Darker?

Well let's say Rev lives next door and he gets the address and is happy to finally find out who his neighbor is.

He goes next door and discovers that the house was busted into already by a crew that also had a score to settle. Rev walks inside, gets mistaken for the guy and the whole board goes dark from the loss.

Too dark?

Well lets say Rev only finds the door ajar and the missing equipment was set out on the porch so he takes it and leaves. Next day investigators come over and kick in Rev's door and drag him downtown to discuss what he stole off the porch.

And the guy inside the house already met the judge so Rev is a person of interest in his departure. The Rev points to the DM's and this thread and they see my name.

Back I go for another 20 just for hanging out with you guys. It's a tough world, be careful and don't let your parole officer read your postings.

We just don't know how a thing might end.

In all seriousness - While they are not easy to rip, it is mostly just technique, not so much brute strength. You do need to have one heck of string grip to do it one one tear though. 3" phone book is not actually as tough as it looks once you figure out the technique. It has been decades but used to do it for easy to win bets.
My small engines teacher in high school, that was his thing. Probably weighed 135 lbs. Yes, it is all in the technique.

I have tried this and come into some weird outcomes

ALL Names changed for privacy! Fake names ahead

When I sold the items I asked for a name and address to ship to, they told me their name was JOHN DOE

when I was paid in PayPal it came from JOHN ROBERTSON

I didn’t think twice, figured PayPal is using old info, person got married, changed last name for whatever reason, didn’t think much of it

Mailed items to JOHN DOE

now that I’m digging, I found in PayPal I can find some info on him and his PayPal email is something like J.ROBERTSON@gmail

So that makes me think at one point in time the name was JOHN ROBERTSON but for whatever reason they had me ship to JOHN DOE. maybe that’s the current name

When I search both JOHN DOE or JOHN ROBERTSON + his town + his state, I find…nothing

I have the address and found the county clerk website with up to date parcel records and the house is owned by a woman who’s name is completely different and doesn’t have DOE or ROBERTSON in the name.

From what he says he has a kid, and I thought ok I know of someone with a kid, and him and his wife live in the basement of the mother in laws house. So maybe it’s a situation like that.

But regardless I can’t find a phone number and I am not sure what the current last name is, but I suspect it’s DOE as that’s what he wanted his package addressed to, unless he gave me a pseudonym to try and hid the real last name, which is what’s in use by PayPal currently and in the gmail address connected to PayPal

I have emailed this J.ROBERTSON gmail address 3x and never received a reply

Edit: found an obituary does family member and he’s listed as surviving family as JOHN DOE ROBERTSON

A member posted a build thread and in that thread I offered a sump for sale. They messaged with me, wanted it, sent me the money, and I mailed them the sump. I rate the transaction A+. Both parties happy and good communication

We started talking and they were friendly and asking questions about their build and I was offering advice and help

Through convo they mentioned they need a skimmer. I had a spare skimmer for their size tank, I offered it for sale, they wanted it, they paid me. So far this dude seems legit

He has lighting questions. I told him he needs par readings, and out of kindness and due to two successful payments and weeks of dms, I offered to include my par meter in the package with the skimmer I was shipping and said he could borrow it for a few week and mail it back when he’s got the readings. He happily agreed.

Then he started saying he needs to wait for his sister to loan him a laptop to take readings because he didn’t have one. I was blown off week after week and was trying to be patient but felt like excuses sometimes seemed repetitive

Then he disappears from forum for weeks and no messages answered. He finally came back and said he would send it back that week and he never did.

I want my par meter back. I don’t think he’s a scammer I think he has a busy life and mentioned kids going through potty training, work having long hours, and the build going slow due to life.

I want my par meter back and he’s not answering Gmail emails, forum messages, and I even sent a PayPal invoice for the meter with a note saying please send it back or pay for it; and I have no response.

Anyone in or near Franklin, NC? Get my par meter in a box mailed back to me, I’ll pay the sh, and I’ll send you a reward - PayPal cash or if you want to split sh, I’ll send you a Cynarina. That’s right. A 250-300$ coral if you want it.

Someone help me please. I have the address and name. Seems like a nice guy who just got busy and put me on the way way back burner. This was sent in June. It’s been long enough.
Dude, my family lives near there, and they don't have any modern technology working. No cell towers, power lines, or running water. I just heard from a stranger who is volunteering and has a sat phone, who told me that my family is safe, on Friday morning. I don't know when I'm going to hear from them. If you can be patient, I believe you will eventually hear from the person. And unfortunately, that's probably best case scenario. I'd rather not speculate on the bad case... If I could reach my family I'd ask them to run around and inquire. If I do hear from them, I'll check in with you. Franklin is the Boone docks, I mean really rural. I'm sorry you're in this position. I got a decent par meter for under $150 on Amazon. You could use it and return it if you really need to check you light.

Well you know how I feel about PAR meters....

but you could send me the Cynarina and I can send him some kind of mean note and a video of me tearing a phone book in half... well I guess there is no such thing as phone books anymore....

No good deed I suppose.

Sure, could be dead or sick or had some terrible life event or maybe sold it for crack or baby food... who knows. Honestly at this point it sounds like a write-off unfortunately.
That area was one of the worst affected places in NC after Helene went through there. My family lives 20 miles north of Franklin, and I still haven't heard directly from them...

You could call Macon Co Sherrifs Department and ask for a welfare check. That your friend has been through Helene and you can't get ahold of him. Or you can post his name on the Helene missing people's report, and see if he's listed as missing/safe/deceased. That could be your fastest avenue. I wish I could be of more help...

My best wishes if that is the situation. Maybe he fell behind on things and then had disaster strike. I wouldn’t be surprised if a month from now I get a random message from him and things pick back up where we left off

I hope everything is ok, a par meter is the least of concerns if your home is flooded or destroyed

Just wish I had an update

Others mentioned it, and I’m on the west coast so I have no idea, but just looking at the path of Helene, which tore up Tennessee too, it looks like Franklin, NC may have been in that path too?

I’ve read mixed speculation in here about the severity of that Hurricane in relation to Franklin, but over 200 people did die from it.
