Generally any lighting that isn’t super bright. As far as bare bottom I wouldn’t know, having a fairly deep sand bed
Thank you. I’m up in the air about sand in the new tank. I’ve never kept a bare bottom tank but I had an idea of encrusting corals over the bottom. The 3 top contenders are pulsing Xenia, gsp or gonis

IMO GSP and Xenia will not isolate to the bottom only. No matter how diligent you are about them they will find purchase on your other rock areas and become a nuisance.

Zoas would be another potential choice to cover the bottom glass if that is what you are looking to do but they will trap detritus and such.

What is the reasoning for a bare bottom tank?

I love Gonis and Euphyllia. Maybe too much

I mean they’ll probably grow fine but you might want to put them on tiles so you can move em if necessary

Display must have sand...bare bottom doesn't look as good. But...sand is more of a pain. I have to have it though

It's all about personal preferences. No wrong or right about it.
I’ve just never tried it and got the wild idea of some coral encrusting the bottom rather than having sand. Can’t learn if you don’t try new things

I can see the advantage of no issues with flow blowing sand around and you can run flow from behind the rocks to keep detritus from building up back there.

But, I prefer the look of sand and the way that it helps lock my rockwork in place. Plus there is some buffering capabilities

Encrusting corals would be pretty cool. Acan echinata, favia, favites, any number of montiporas. Could look really neat.

edit: cyphastrea would be another one.
