I think a alk jump from 5.6 to 11.6 could definitely tick off a torch.

It’s not the number. It’s the big jump in a small timeframe
Probably. But to enduce brown jelly disease. That sucks. Def having troubles getting off the ground with the gha diatoms cyano and my swings. I’m learning but it isn’t fun. Lost a few coral to date and rather not lose this sbb order. My zoas are…. Okay but could be happier gha is annoying them though.

I’m thinking tomorrow I need to go get more reagents. I have 2 phos 2 nitrate left and enough alk. I think for learning processes and how my tank is breathing I need to do a week long testing for better understanding. I was being conservative and trying to save money and be cute by testing less. It’s costing me.

None of the stuff in your tank is going to consume a lot of alk if it's lps and softies.

Now I’m more concerned. My hellfire torch was retracted and I blasted it with a turkey baster and a ton of brown chunks came out. I’m scared it’s brown jelly disease but I have no idea why there was a parameter swing but nothing else to stress it. I do need to check alk but 11.6 alk I doubt would fry a torch.
All the chemicals your using to get rid or this or that, in such a short time. Could be missing with everything in your tank. Your biologics are all out of swing.

I think you’re right. My bacteria and bio diversity was weak to start being all dry rock. I went in heavy handed with the chemiclean and hydrogen peroxide and it probably is throwing whatever semblance of an ecosystem off. How do you guys suggest I reset. I’m prepping for my weekly water change for tomorrow which will help a little

I know the famous line is steady and slow in reefing wins the race. Overall I think that I have blown by that even though I thought I was being conservative.

Let’s start with my basics

I’ll test tonight. Tomorrow water changes. Here’s what I know. I seem to have diatoms which make sense since I used chemiclean. I’ll stop hydrogen peroxide to treat gha and spot treat any corals that are agitated by it. Now what’s the best natural way to beat back diatoms.

You need some kinda of healthy bacteria transport. Either from a bottle, live rock, or even a friend's dirty water/ filter sponge. And take everything sllloooowwww. This hobby is very much a physical application of the story "The Tortoise and the Hare"

Okay. I can pick up some microbacter bacteria and dose that. No harm there. Also yes. I think that being lackadaisical in my approach thinking I can just KIND OF fly by the seat of my pants and get away with it isn’t working. That said, I did take live rock from my lfs and it seems to be the one rock where diatoms haven’t grown.

- that said I’m starting to get how people when they start their tanks get frustrated. I’m not really. A little bummed because I want that gorgeous garden you all have and struggling to keep some LPS, but truthfully speaking you guys and reading I grew my knowledge base larger than it had been with the biocube where I truly was just in whatever the softies are alive and everything seems to be going and I fed a cube every other day and at one point didn’t do any water changes for 3 months. (The big tank gets weekly changes. It’s very easy for me since the water is sent straight to the sewer compared to lugging water out of the 16 to the toilet every week and making a mess.)

Fair, but something for sure was consuming my alk as in 10 days it went from 8.5 to 5.6. Either way something is consuming it. I think I need to just do a weekly rest buckle downs
Alk is consumed by everything. Calcium is a true indicator of growth. You could have 10dkh and I add an acid and instantly bring down. We use alk to prevent acidification, the breaking down of calcium ions.

I mentioned it looked like Dino’s. The new pic confirms. That info on how to deal was posted.

What you blew off isn’t bjd it’s Dino’s. It will suffocate and steal the nutrients. The odds of you saving a stressed torch isn’t good.

You’ve been dosing peroxide it’s been holding it back but also suppressing your good bacteria. I mentioned a con to peroxide.

The numbers of your Parameters is only going to dirty the solution. You need to decide what you want to fix first and fix only that. One thing at a time fixing everything chasing numbers is what got us here. What you say, we together get ourselves out.

Okay. Honestly I think your advice has been nothing but solid. Let’s stop the peroxide as proposed. What would your next approach to this be besides bacteria dosing.

That bubbly snot looks like dinos not diatoms. Those can be tricky depending on which ones you have (need a microscope to determine exactly). Good news is that those appear to be the free swimming variety.

Typically causes by a biological deficiency. Did you redose bacterias after chemiclean?

Typical treatment is reduced lighting, H2O2 dosing, bottle bacteria dosing, adding a UV.
