I have had the tank for a month so far its been fish only. I wanted to start adding corals. How does the dosing work for a 65 gal using the red sea ABC foundation concentrated liquid pack. Thank you

#WelcometoR2R!!! Congratulations on the new tank! Let's see if we can get some answers to your question about dosing the Red Sea products...

The ABC only needs to be added when you’ve tested and found the basic foundation elements need replenishing. Basically don’t add anything to the system until it’s needed, which if your just starting out with corals may be a few weeks depending on what corals you add.

And then just follow the instructions

And Welcome to R2R!!!

Welcome to reef keeping @Adilenemv. Suggestion would be to wait until you have more understanding of your tank before starting the Red Sea program. Initially just doing regular water changes will likely be sufficient in the beginning. Once you have your tank stocked well and you have a better handle on parameters, testing, etc. then look into any of those programs.

If you want to start as soon as you add coral to your system, more than likely you could do more harm than good because your consumption will likely be minimal. But with that said, if you still insist on starting the Red Sea program, dose based upon calcium consumption. You will have to measure your calcium everyday at the exact time each day to determine how much calcium your system is consuming. Follow the instructions on the bottle based upon the type of coral you have in the system.

Also note, dosing based upon calcium consumption can have its drawbacks from my understanding. You could be adding too much of one element that may not be consumed at the same rate as the other elements based upon calcium consumption.

Wish you the best and happy reefing.

I use Red Sea ABC. When I started I would test my water every Friday to see where I am at. Track your parameters here in your build thread, on a notebook, or get an APP. See what changes from week 1 to week 2. At the start I had very little changes and did not need to does. A weekly water change of 10% was fine and my parameters were consistent. The more corals I added... and once they started to grow I started to see a drop from week to week. So then I dosed weekly. If you have the three separate bottles you need to dose in order A-B-C and test in between each one. Again as they grow you may need to start dosing each day. You can figure out a daily amount by taking week 1 - week 2= change / 7 days to get a daily dosing. Then test once a week to make sure it is staying consistent.

Big thing is don't chase number, find what your tank is happy at and keep it consistent.

Thank you so is it OK to add corals and frags without adding the red sea program

Yes. Just do weekly water changes.

Things like having an ATO (auto-top off), a good source for RO/DI water, a good refractometer, and controlling your tanks temperature are more important than thinking about the Red Sea program. If you already have all those checked off the list then just add the coral. Be certain to have a test kit for at least Alkalinity/Calcium. Depending on the types of coral you add, those 2 parameters will change more than anything else.

Yes, your salt has all of the stuff corals need already in it. Dosing it just what you do to replenish what is taken out. To start with if your salinity is mixed to 35ppt all your parameters are good. A weekly water change will replace the small amount that is used by any inverts or frags. Dosing will be later once the corals are using up more than what a water change can replace. Get some good test kits so you can monitor where you’re at. Do you know what type of corals you want to get? Softies will require much less, while SPS will be more demanding.
