Oh I see. The certificate part is mostly an accolade for completion.
Can I test out? J/k! Lol. It’d be interesting to see how the info would be given in certain areas, as there are many ways to be successful. But I’m down to do it. :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

What do you think about R2R offering FREE learning modules and certificates on certain reefing topics?

Is it worth it for us to think about creating learning modules where members read and learn about certain reefing topics and when complete receive a certificate?
I think its a great idea, but you would need to have an exam of some kind at the end and require a passing grade for certification.

I would certainly be interested and it can help everyone qualify responses they get and avoid misinformation.

Knowledge is power in this hobby and can only benefit those who participate.
I support this

On the surface, based on the educational aspect, I like the idea. But I can also see it as a method of stratifying members based on modules completed.dismissing something someone says because they don't have the appropriate badges.

I can see it now, someone with 10 large fish in a 50 gallon tank, and when questioned, they simply point to their "Surgeonfish Husbandry" badge while saying, I know what I'm doing.

Returning to the optimistic aspect, it definitely wouldn't hurt to get people interested in learning the basics and offering something that they may value as a reward.

I don't understand the concept of a certificate. What does that mean exactly? We are certified on Reef2Reef to respond to others? I don't understand. It's not like the certificate really means anything.

Y’all are overthinking this! Ha!

It’s just a certificate of completion and accomplishment.

I do like the idea. Some initial hurdles I see is who decides on what content is covered, who presents the content, and whether the content is viable and up to date. How to limit commercial bias?

It would be great. I like this forum, but it is a conglomeration of opinions. The problem with which is to figure out the experience level of the individual offering advice. Compound this with the speed at which the Hobby/industry is changing, it would be nice to have a "library of learning" to help learn.
Thanks for thinking of the idea.

Will they transfer to any colleges? I'd love another degree!

It would give me a little more confidence in answering questions on a subject knowing the correct information was vetted by knowledgeable r2r members. I would enjoy taking the classes.

I think it's a cool idea, but I will say that, as mentioned, there are a lot of differing opinions on subjects. Unfortunately there's no true formulas for running a successful reef tank.

For instance, everyone knows RODI is the only way to have a reef tank successful long term and yet RODI is relatively new to the reefing world and there are plenty of successful reefers using tap water.

Everyone knows MH lights are the best lights on the market but LEDs and T5s (and even T12s!) grow corals just as good and grow less or equal amounts of algae.

Everyone knows SPS only thrive in 0 nutrient systems except people grow gorgeous SPS with amazing colors in tanks with 1.4 phosphates and 100+ nitrates.
