I don't mind people having badges for things they have expertise in.
It might help wash out some of the ambiguity on threads at times.
I would, however need a full explanation of how this might work because I'm just a bit confused there .

If you are going to give accreditation badges then you also need a final test to demonstrate competency. Put their test scores on the face of each badge. When they get enough badges, then a practical oral exam with a panel of reefing guru's to validate that they didn't use AI to complete the tests, and then you might have something.

Lighting, chemistry, physics, and biology with badges -degrees offered in each subject area, leading to a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in practical reefing.

Imo, this will never work if you offer it for free. How are you going to pay examiners for their time and effort to evaluate the candidates?

Edit.
And I do hope someday to earn the coveted Reef2Reef PARTICIPATION Badge!

Badges may deter new comers from paying attention to advice from people that don't have badges. I may be wrong but have a hunch lot of knowledgeable people will not have badges but still can offer advise as good or better than those that choose to participate in this, if it come to be.

I think the learning modules are a great idea, and despite I’ve got a bunch of badges already , I really don’t feel the need. Maybe as mentioned before a link to completed modules/competencies?

Totally agree.

Us supporting members will be flooded with questions about building structures and the amount of weight that a floor can carry based upon our Supporting Member badges. :)

What do you think about R2R offering FREE learning modules and certificates on certain reefing topics?

Is it worth it for us to think about creating learning modules where members read and learn about certain reefing topics and when complete receive a certificate?
My thought is that such a venture would not be worth your time. There would likely be very few people wanting to go to “school” to learn something about their hobby when it’s so easy to make a post for every question that needs answering. Online courses seem like a great idea but runs up against low motivation and discipline to complete the course.

I’d rather see R2R apply AI to the huge database of posts to mine it for information and trends. Maybe a graduate school project.

I'm not sure how "AI" would sort the good information from the bad? My fear would be it would believe some of the nonsense I have posted and certify it as reefing gospel. Lordy, have mercy.

If this is like learning modules at my work, we aren't talking about lengthy online courses rather something like 15-20 slides of info with questions reviewing the material spread throughout or after in quiz format and must get 80% correct to pass.

This reminds me of a class we have online where I work.

I’m sorta confused about the goal of the idea, but good info is never a bad thing, imo.

The main goal is to educate people on aquarium topics from beginner to more advanced. Educated hobbyists are going to be better stewards, are going to be able to educate others and are going to be more successful in the hobby.

Cool, I understand that part. It was more of the certificate idea. I can see certificates being useful for those wishing to work in the industry, just unsure of a practical use outside of that.

How would this work? Would it be like a seperate website or would it be somewhere in this website

That way if someone has a question of your ability to give a good answer to an issue they can see at least you've completed the course
Alternatively, if someone asks a relevant question, you can check their profile to see if they've completed the course, and advise them to do so if needed :)

Oh I see. The certificate part is mostly an accolade for completion.
