Hey everyone!

I was wondering if it would be possible to house a yellow tang or a blue tang in a 80 gallon shallow tank. Essentially the tank would be 6ft long, 16in wide and 16in tall.

Kind of like this but just slightly wider and taller.

Although I don’t plan on upgrading this year, I’m just doing some fun preplanning. Any ideas?

Yellow yes with the length. I wouldnt with a blue since they get pretty big! Maybe a bristletooth or something like a lavender! Just so they have room to flip around up top you know? A baby blue would be okay for a while but not as an adult! Thats a pretty cool and unique tank!

A yellow would be fine for sure. I would skip the blue just because they can get large and the tank isn’t very wide or tall for turning and moving naturally once bigger. It would look awkward with too large of a fish in such a tank.

What do you guys think the ideal width and height for a blue tang should be then?

Standard 180g is the general consensus, or as big as you can afford if you can go bigger. That is a 6 by 2 by 2 tank for standard but I think you could certainly play with those dimensions.
