Oh wow those tangs look amazing! The yellow tang that I’ll be getting will be only 1.25 inch in size and it’s like one of the first shipments into the country after a long time. It’s still expensive, about 350 dollars. The bigger 4 inch ones that are available are the ones that came before the ban and they are about 1,000 US dollars a piece here.
If I keep the yellow tang in my refugium for about 3-4 months, how much do you think he might grow? If I feed frequently, like 3-4 times a day and there is a constant source of hair algae as well as nori a few times a week?
Let me know please!
Certainly he’ll grow a bit, but not sure the yellow going to like that extended refugium stay of 3-4 months, unless it’s a large refuge then fine.

Being smaller, this may be a plus as the yellow won’t have the size to get to far up the chain and stay there. He will have issues (or visa versa) with the purple due to shape, same with sailfin.

I have not found the yellow to be a very aggressive tang member and it may be more of an issue keeping him well past time in QT instead of letting him find his spot in the hierarchy.

At one point, he’ll, (like every tang we add) have to go through the process. But once that’s settled (hopefully without violence) it’s settled until the next addition.

For me, I always feed in isolation for a week so I’m confident in what he/she is liking most, then in they go.

Yeah I used to do that with my flowerhorn, so I can do that with the tangs as well. Thank you for the tip!
From sps I have a Monti now, but I’ll get some simple corals like birdsnest, pocillopora, stylophora, etc. These are mainly what I plan on keeping in sps, so I can try that. At what percentage would you suggest keeping the lights? I have Radions. Haha that’s the eventual plan, love that line! Growing tank for growing tangs!!!
sorry I have no experience on radions. However, I figured that my sailfin zebra tang stopped bothering regal blue tang when I turned my led into bluer spectrum (I would say it is around 20000K from my vision) while the light intensity can be tuned for your favour and photosynthesis need of coral.

Hey guys I have a 5x2x2 feet 150 gallon tank. I love how tangs look and was making a list of the ones that I want.

Tangs that I currently have:
Blue tang x 1
Tomini Tang x 1
Yellow Tang x 1 (it’s on pre-order)

The tangs that I want:
Purple Tang x 1
Desjardinii Tang x 1

Now before you guys get all tang police on me please hear me out

The tank has a somewhat open scape and it will be lps and soft coral dominated with some sps corals.

The tomini tang and blue tang are are already in the tank and I’m getting the yellow tang soon. Since the yellow tang will be really small I’m planning on keeping by him in my refugium for 2-3 months before adding him to the main tank.

Other than that, I really want the yellow tang in order to make the “Golden Trio of Tangs” as they call it which consists of the yellow, purple and blue tang, or so that’s what I read at least. Even if it’s not, I still really like the purple tang!

That makes it a total of 4 tangs, I really love the Desjardinii tang and would love to have it, from what I’ve read they grow very fast and get very big, but I know someone who has a Red Sea 750XXL with a Desjardinii tang that is about 6 years old and it’s not even 7 inches yet. So I was hoping that I could get the Desjardinii as well, do let me know!

The other fish that I have (ticked ones) also want to get are:
Clownfish x 2 ✅
Purple Firefish x 1 ✅
Royal Gramma x 1
Midas Blenny x 1
Blue Streak Cleaner Wrasse x 1 ✅
Yellow Wrasse x 1 ✅
Naoko Fairy Wrasse x 1
Red Head Solon Wrasse x 1
Earmuff Wrasse x 1
Ornate Leopard Wrasse x 1 ✅
White Leopard Wrasse x 1
Lyretail Anthias x 4 (1 male and 3 females)
Chromis x 6 ✅

If I exclude the tangs, I basically have 10 more fish to add. Initially I planned on a mixed reef tank with all types of corals but then I changed it to a tank which is dominated by soft and lps corals. I have a plate like rock which I will fill with meaty corals and in the back I will put soft corals that grow kind of like trees, like colt, Kenya and gorgonians. Plan on making a rock with mushrooms and toadstools. I will also get some easy to keep sps.

I kept all the above mentioned tangs and a foxface in 6 foot 180. I had the blue and sail in there for about 2 1/2 years before I felt they were getting too big. I put them all in at once as 1-2 1/2 inch fish and never had an issue with aggressive behavior. The 2 large tangs that I rehomed are now in a 350 gallon together

168 Gallon here. No Tang Police Please: A few things to consider:

Temperament of Tangs. I did meticulous planning on adding tangs - Had a Blonde Naso and Blue Hippo at one point added a Yellow Tang - The Yellow did not last 24 Hours (I was not happy). I figured that it must have been the Blond Naso (my Blue hippo is scared of her own shadow :). Remember they have personalities. Whatever you do I would make sure of the body type and relative size to one another and add at same time (or very close). I have two Tangs now - The Blond Naso went MIA years ago. I have a Sailfin and a Blue Hippo (The Blue Hippo is the Alpha but she does not know it - ha ha). In any case I have 2 Clowns, Mandarin Goby, Damsel, Chromis (a few buddies went MIA), Starry Blennie, 6 line wrasse. The Tangs will "introduce themselves" that is when we hold out breath. I was feeling I took a big gamble when I added my sailfin - but it worked. I would not keep any more tangs. Another concern I had was: did my reef have enough caves for every one? I am done adding fish at this point. Although I am considering a 236 Gallon Waterbox at which time I may add a 3rd Tang - no decisions yet. I believe you should seriously consider 2 Tangs a limit for a 150. I read somewhere a 150 was the smallest tank for a Blue Hippo of medium to large size. If you move forward with you sailfin - remember to give them room too - When they raise their fins there relative size can double. Remember they don't call them surgeon fish for nothing. So be careful and thoughtful. Good Luck and Happy Reefing!

Addition: I would not do 5 Tangs. I am thinking of a 236 Waterbox and I don't think I would do 5 Tangs in it(the sole reason I am considering a upgrade is the Tangs). You invest a lot of money and want the fish to be happy and act well - give them room. Happy Reefing!

well the sump is like the size of a 15 gallon tank and the yellow tang will be really small, like only 1.5-2 inches since it’s from biota, so I was hoping that keeping him down there with the constant source of algae (not macro algae) will help grow him out more and also quickly in 3 months, I would really want him to be around 3 inches before I add him to the main display tank just so that he isn’t bullied by the other fish.

I’ve been reading what everyone has been saying and also did some research of my own again and how does this revised list of tangs sound? Then I’ll have to remove the blue tang though which I don’t want to but have to :/

Yellow tang X 1
Purple Tang X 1
Gem/Scopas Tang X 1
Tomini Tang X 1

Ah I see, from what I’ve read it’s best to keep only one tang of one specific shape or a few of the same shape in order to reduce the aggression.

I know you said not to keep that many, but what do you think of this list? I’ll move the blue tang, and I’ll be getting both the yellow and purple tangs but then there may be problems with aggression so I was thinking of adding either a gem tang (one of my dream fish) and if I can’t get that then the scopas tang. Let me know what you think!

Yellow Tang X 1
Purple Tang X 1
Gem/Scopas Tang X 1
Tomini Tang X 1

If you put large tangs in a tank that looks too small.... it just looks awkward/stupid. Large fish without a large tank make the tank look smaller than it is.

I would just stick to the smaller tangs, tank as a whole will look better.

How is this revised list?

Purple tang x 1
Scopas tang x 1
Tomini tang x 1

I’ve never seen them get that big in tanks. The biggest I’ve seen were 7 inches, that too 8 years old each. And they were in a 7 feet long 250 gallon tank. And in the store I’ve asked before and they said that the biggest they have ever seen were 8 inches in size and that was in a 750 gallon tank. I’m talking about all three of these tangs.

So I just assumed that they don’t get as big in aquariums

New list as in I already have the blue tang (it’s still small), so I’ll trade him out for the scopas most likely and then I’ll get the purple and yellow, that’s what I was thinking.

So instead of 5 there is four and these don’t grow as big and won’t have as much of aggression issues. Since it’s three zebrasoma so then the aggression will get distributed better and also it’s one bristletooth which I really like

Yes, was just pointing that out to you to make sure you know. Jay Hemdal uses the calculator 0.8 times size of wild fish(average) to use for the size of the tank.
But, you are right, it most likely won't get that big. 6ish inches is probably the norm.
With 4 tangs you are going to have to keep up on the water quality in that size tank.

Sure what else you have planned for fish but good luck with the tank.

That sounds like tank volume. Not the size of the display. 5/2/2 is about 120 gallons.

yeah I understand, thank you!

Yeah I have an oversized skimmer and also I change out the filter socks every other day, if needed I can change it out daily as well! I also have a refugium which had chaeto and grape algae but those died so I turned it to a hair algae scrubber like refugium, basically hair algae grows all over the glass and the bottom and on the pieces of egg grate I put in there as well.

The other fish will be:

Clownfish x 2
Royal Gramma x 1
Midas blenny x 1
Cleaner Wrasse x 1
Yellow Wrasse x 1
Purple Firefish x 1
Ornate Leopard x 1
White leopard wrasse x 1
Naoko wrasse x 1
Earmuff wrasse x 1
Red head Solon wrasse x 1
Lyretail Anthias x 4
Chromis x 6
