A way with words - this made me giggle - you are a gem.
…A game changer, and no need for “impure thoughts” to get started…he he he
BTW
… I have a free dosing head head and been thinking of crushing a few up and dosing my tank; Wondering what color tang would result crossing a Purple tang with a ORA yellow with a Atlantic blue
;)

I use AFR too. Love it.

What additive do you use to add Manganese, Iron and Iodine?

Can you share some specifics or point to online info, I need to add those too.

Do you test Manganese, Iron, Iodine by yourself too, using what test kit?
Hi!

I bought the Reef Moonshiners Manganese and Iron additives. For Iodine, I bought potassium iodide crystals and made my own solution using RODI:

Potassium iodide

I sent in an ICP and saw that these were low and started dosing very slowly. Have seen positive responses from my corals being very conservative with the amounts that I’m dosing and will be sending in for another test soon. My goal is to dial in the dosing to make sure that I’m not overshooting everything and then keep the dosing steady and check every 6 months or so.

Just plug the low values into the RM assessment tool. Then correct them. No need to go slow. :) Except for the Iodine, but we don’t use the calculator for iodine anyway.

Thanks for the response and thoughts! Appreciate it :)

Since I’m using AFR and it does contain these supplements already I am trying to be careful but I admit to not having checked into the RM tool. Will take a look. Thank you!

No problem. Fe and Mn are relatively safe if overdosed. FYI, if not using ICP-MS those two will likely be below the detection limits of OES, although they do have slightly better sensitivity than some of the other traces.

Thanks for sharing!

I had Oceamo run both to have a good baseline for comparison. Helps me frame my mind around the right strategy for me. Plus I wanted to understand the differences from a practical perspective. Data is fun :).

I think AFR is a wonderful and simple product for many users. Its ease of use is almost irresistible! But I also think it comes with risk that some users may not fully understand.

Depending on your tank, the product may work great until it doesn’t work anymore. At that point some users may not understand the reason why their tank has developed issues, and may not know the steps needed to address the situation. This can be frustrating, and unfortunately lead to a very undesirable outcome. I am of the belief that too many people leave this wonderful hobby way to soon in frustration or failure.

Superficially it appears to be a very simple product to use, but there are some underlying complexities regarding chemical balance over time that need to be understood. Knowledge of the product and its limitations are the key to its successful use. Also a little luck that your tank requirements match the formulation doesn’t hurt.

What would lead the product to not work anymore? What kind of issues? What undesirable outcome? This post is frustrating. All this info but no info.

@Singspot in case you’re interested:

I was in the middle of a few things when I responded to this so I didn’t put in how I made the KI solution but wanted to come to back to you on this.

I made a 10 g/L solution in RODI water so it’s a 1E7 ug/L solution. I am targeting 50 ug/L doses twice a week so in a 200 g system (757 L), the dose would be 3.8 mL whenever dosing. Sending another ICP in after 2 weeks of dosing like this to understand whether everything is where I want it to be.

What doesn't work anymore? What are the developed issues? What needs to be addressed? Lastly what is the undesirable outcome?

Be specific.

I am of the belief that too many people leave this wonderful hobby way to soon in frustration or failure.

Of course - what does that have to do with the topic at hand?

What are the complexities? What chemical balance do we need to understand? What limitations?

Heck of a mindstory.

There is no need to be frustrated. To repeat what I said, I think AFR is a wonderful product. It not only works, it clearly works very well. There are countless beautiful tanks that use it, and it’s outright silly to say it does not work!

The purpose of my post was to stress education and the importance of understanding the products “potential” limitations:

1. The potential for Calcium / Alkalinity imbalance over time
2. The potential for trace element imbalance over time
3. The limit of maximum daily dosage of 25 ml per 26 gallon
4. Users should really do WC’s to improve long term chemical balance

These topics have been discussed ad nauseam. If you disagree these are valid concerns, then so be it.

There was a time when I personally experienced calcium / alkalinity imbalance, and I have personally experienced trace element imbalance. I know first hand that these issues can harm a tank, and even kill corals. This is my opinion based on personal experience. If you disagree with any of this, then so be it. I respect your opinion, and I have no intention or desire to change your mind.

Again, the point of my original post is simply that users should research the product, and be educated about the product before using it.

That is all I have to say about this topic.

Maybe frustrated was the wrong way to put it. It's more like you added a lot of information but had no context of what you were talking about.

I don't disagree or agree with using it, I'm actually researching whether it be good for my tank or not.

I want to say thank you for your input but there was really no input.
