Well, I continue to collect parts, pieces and lots of goodies. I anticipate that my sump by GEO should be completed in the next days. Joe over at Glass Cages teased me at the end of the day today with a picture of this sexy beast! I feel like it is almost ready to start getting after it. The contractor was here this week and took the window out in my living room as it is the only way I can get this tank in my house. Contractor starts there work for this project next week. I am pulling about 120 amps into the room for this build and I am putting in plumbing for a sink and also plumbing from my mixing room on the other side of the house. I am looking forward to my 14x10 man cave with one side of the peninsula facing that room and the rest of the house gets the other two views. Look at this sexy beast:

Awesome tank! Look forward to the build.

I never had the chiller hooked up to this much water before. In the past I had about 50 gallons of salt mixed that I would use for a water change for the Max 500. I had another brute of salt mix that is (still) used for AWC for the reefer. For the AWC I didn’t care about temps, I was only doing 3k ML at a time. But for the 50G I would use most of it when I did a water change for the Max, so I would use the chiller to get it down to what I needed. It has worked flawlessly for that. So I am using the Iwaki 40RT. I’m not sure if more volume would be better or worse in this scenario. But over 60 minutes I dropped 250g 3 degrees.
3 degrees on 250G in an hour is pretty powerful.
Depending on how the PID is set up, this would keep everything in range easily I think.

Well, I think I had my first casualty today. I forgot to put teflon tape on some threads on the outside of the float valve the feeds the left mixing container. While at dinner about 5 gallons dropped out, the leak, really is no big deal. The water did as expected, ran out of the garage and into the drive way. However, the brand new Reeflo Hammerhead must have gotten dripped on pretty good. I plugged the pump in to see the flow with 250g of RODI in the tank and it clicked for a few seconds and then died. I have a fan on it now, but I have a bad feeling I smoked this pump. Which now is a headache as I have 250g of rodi with no pump to mix or move it, lol, sigh…

Tank arrives tomorrow!

Electricians will be here Monday to install x6 20amp circuits for the new tank. This LiFePO4 setup will keep critical life support going till we decided if we need to fire the old girl up. This will act as an auto transfer for one of the 20 amps circuits and our TV/Internet/router will plug into the inverter.

Look what is finally in the house. We started thinking about a new tank last November, decided to do it in February and we were off to the races in March.

Great to see the tank installed and positioned. It is a beast.
Did you order in March and have it now delivered?

What is inside the planted tank?

I think it was late March. I changed designs about 42 times. I was in no rush. I’m really going old school with n this build. 3 closed loops, 4 sea swirls, metal halides (plus LED and T5s). So as I thought through a lot of things, I updated the build. If I hadn’t changed the design so many times, the lead time would have been shorter. I didn’t do a final approval on design til labor 7-8 weeks ago, I think. I think I drove GEO crazier with my sump design changes. Hope to have that in the next week or two.

As for the planted tank, nothing special. About 10 different types of plants and a bunch of petco fish. I was injecting CO2, but accidentally injected a full bottle in 2 hours. Wife wasn’t happy… Luckily, all the sleeping fish came back to life, we did lose one about a week later. But, talk about maintenance free. I haven’t cleaned the glass but once in 2 years and I caused that issue. I really need to break this down but I feel guilty as it’s not the fishes fault and I don’t want them going some place I don’t trust. Short of the lights I would likely trade the entire setup for some Rod’s.

Here is a high tech autocad that I had done to help illustrate what we are doing. We have this formal dining room that in all the years we have owned this house we have used it once, and even then we had to bring in our pool furniture to sit on. We live at the kitchen table, we aren't "formal" kinda people :)

My wife has allowed me to take this room over. When you walk in the house the viewable short side will greet you with a surprise about 7 feet from the front door. For the commoners who walk about my house, you will be able to see two of the three viewable sides. The select few that are allowed into my lair will be able to enjoy the third viewable side. The common folks side of the tank will have a built in above and below along with a wall and door built. This room will eventually have 2 frag tanks, sump (72x24x20), cryptic sump (24x24x24) and eventually an LPS tank. The room will start with the cryptic and a frag that Joe made for me. They also made the cryptic.

I had sanded and primed plywood installed that was furred out with 2x4s laying on their flat side. It will be painted to match existing walls and ceilings to blend in. I am only doing this for two areas of the room. 1) The ceiling - I plan to have my lighting rack on a rail system so I can slide it complete out of the way. I am going to have 2 closed loops that will I will be plumbing above the tank that will feed 4 sea swirls. I'll need easy access to services those and the lighting rack itself. Plus it will make it a heck of a lot easier to get in and out of the tank. I am putting about 9 foot of rails up up and it makes it easier to not worry what I am attaching to. Plus, I can't stand low light, I plan to have tons of over head LED strip lighting for me to see. This also makes for a lot less patch work down the road if/when I rip this apart.

For the wall, between all the nonsense I will torture myself with I assume I will have about 100 or more screws in the wall, again, no worries about screws into drywall with no real support. And, less drywall damage in the long run. Added to that, the sump and many other "wet" items will be up against this wall. Zero mucks given about the wood getting wet from time to time.

We added the cabinets (more to come) so that my wife can have all her storage back. I appear to have become a hoarder of stuff...

If you look to the left of the tank and the right of the window, I have a wall mounted dehumidifier that is rated for 2200 sq ft that I am going to mount there. It will be wired to a switch that will turn it on at a preset humidity %.

Remember, you will not see any of this from the common peasant folks area. However, when they return to do the wall/built in/trim, I will add some trim to dress it some. But, I didn't want to cut the crown molding or anything. I am thinking more about putting a wrapper on this to protect it some.

Electrician also started today. This makes panel box number 4 on the house. How many can you possible add to a house? I am now up 2 adding 6 dedicated circuits for the tank and the room. Each one is 20 amps. I have 2 for the lighting alone. I also have the "life support" circuit. I want to thank @telegraham for several of his podcasts that he educated me on this type of power backup (I am @thedryreef on Insta). Our power constantly flickers, 4-6 hours at a time, at least every 6 weeks or so, it's annoying, and I live in a great area with underground utilities - that are 48 years old, lol. This is a game changer. One of the circuits feeds this and this feeds the outlets. It acts as a auto transfer switch. So I can get 20amps to the outlet. I can also get 10 out the back of the unit on a plug. Which, we are plugging our TV/Internet/Wifi into also. I am adding one unit for both furnaces also. Game changers

All outlets will be mounted 5 foot off the ground. All existing outlets were unhooked and are waterproofed, or, that is what I tell myself :)

Are subscriptions available for the "common people" and "selected few" areas?
I would like to subscribe to have access to the fish/fun/man/cave/hide/decompression/escape/comedy room.

I thought about changing my screen name to "TheDryReef", but I think people who know me would know me would no longer know me and not get certain things, lol.

So, you wonder why I have the username I do? Just like hitchhiking trigger fish, things seem to follow me - like a dark cloud of destruction...

This must have happened when it was in shipping. I have access to lots of products due to my job. I ordered this from one of our DCs. Today, 6-8 weeks after having set this up, something catches my eye. I look and I was like "Oh fudge" - My wife looks at me and laughs - "Now what". The waterline is about 1/2 inch below this crack. Sigh... I am going to lower the water about a 1/2 inch more. I have about a month before I put water in my new tank. I am using Tampa Bay sand and some additional rock, so cycling won't be an issue. But, I wasn't planning on having to slam everything into the new tank. I can get another tub here, but the logistics of adding a 3rd water container in the area is a little problematic. I think I am going to mark the slit with a marker and see if it moves at all. The problem is, if it were to let go, I have a massive disaster on my hands. Like, insurance claim sized. Which would completely derail what's going on, plus mess with the work that is being done in the room.

Sadly I think I may have to take the time to empty everything into other containers and swap out the stock tank. I think there is far too much at risk. I am out of town all next week. So, if I order it tomorrow, I'll have it Friday and will have to spend Saturday swapping, which means I lose some valuable project time.
