I think I barely fit in this category. Move me if needed. I've been on R2R for over a year now, and really love it here. Although I am still waiting for the app...?

I've been in and out of fish tanks for 25 years. I never had coral up until the last year and a half. I actually started in salt water in the 90's. I had a plastic swing arm. 90G tank, a fluorescent hood light, a Fluval 404 (?) I think - it was like a clear brown plastic with RISKAY connectors - if you know you know lol and tap water. There was no ATO, but at least it was fish only. Those swings had to be brutal. I would dump salt directly into the tank if I had put too much water into it. There will probably be a couple tangs waiting for me when I go to the other side...

I'll be blogging here and on my website (thedryreef.com) when it's up. Should be 7 days, I've failed with following up with the Wix phone people to process the last changes. There is nothing special, I am just looking for a place to blog generally speaking. I plan to do some other stuff related to reefing as well. You see, I am in recovery. And, when I was a professional relapsologist, there were many youtube podcasts that would trigger me. There are some where I am not sure how the cat talking makes it through at times. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Over the last year I have had some memorable stories here. Even TBS remembered my story ( https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/kp-aquatics-experience.971130/ ) from last year of rocks I purchased from a competitor sat on a runaway apparently, and after being in my display for 12 hours my entire house smelled like a morgue during a power failure. Oh, this reef is in our bedroom, the wife wasn't happy. I'm going with the ladies of TBS for this tank.

Or you may recall - I am the guy that had the really small hitch hiking undulated trigger get in his tank. It was 6 months of pure hell. It left 1 clown and 1 purple tang alone. Anything else that went into the tank was a snack. It ate, literally, hundreds of snails. I couldn't get algae under control because I couldn't get any herbs or cuc into the tank for more than 6 hours. I basically took 3/4 of the tank apart and got him. I traded him for some Rod's to a LFS. Funny story - He was returned twice to the LFS as they didn't heed the warnings and he destroyed all the live stock in both tanks within days. Within 30 days - the tank was hitting its stride, sigh...

So - On to my plans. I should receive both the tank and sump in the next 2 -3 weeks. I started planning for this about 5-6 months ago.

Man - I have worked with so many people, talked with soooo many people about this. Joe, GEO, Antonio, many reefers - some popular some who think I am bat poop crazy for doing some of what I am doing.

New system, everything is 100% custom. I have nearly 95% of everything short of tank and sump in my garage. My wife is starting to realize the scale of this, I say this jokingly. I'll address this in another post:
- Glass cages has built (I've seen portions of it) a 96x36x25 peninsula and a 36" high metal stand that has 15 vertical braces. The tank will have 3 closed loops and 4 Sea Swirls. More on that later. The only thing under the tank will be an Abyzz 400 for the lower loop. There will be no powerheads in this tank, or that is the goal. There will be an Abyzz 400 and 4 L2s
- GEO is building the sump, it's 2 weeks out. The sump, with reservoir is 96x24x15. It will not be under the tank. I've learned that everything will be about function. While I am putting those 22 spinner up on thisbiatch, function absolutely comes first. I learned this on the Reefer.
- Lighting will be fun. 8 XR30s (4B/4P), T5s and 3 Metal Halides. Are you feeling the theme like the title says. I missed out on all the fun in the 2000's and early 2010's, so I am going to make up for some of it with this build, lol.
- More information on the closed loop - It should be mentioned that I will have 2 - 1.5" holes in the bottom of the tank that are loop returns. These are fed through a 2" hole 11" up the short business end of the tank that will feed the Abyzz. I have 2 different options that I will test. 8, 9 or 10 3/4 RFGs. This is loop 1. Loop two is fed by a 1.5" hole near the 2" hole that will hit an L2 then on to 2 sea swirls in to corners above. This is Loop 2. Loop three is the same as Loop 2 just the other 2 corners. Each of these loops will also have a UV that they will flow through. So, no worries about UV turnover based on sump turn. Lots of testing will take place before I even think about putting salt water in the system. Oh, one last thing about the loops - Thanks to the late Jake and Tidal for all educating they did. I was able to get some feedback from Tidal also. I went with Hayward bulkheads with the EPDM gaskets. Everyone who said I shouldn't do this has only used those inexpensive black (abs?) bulkheads, not these. I know I am on to something because I think I am one of the first or few at GC to use these. I'll get into that in a later chapter...
- Of course Apex, Masterallofit, etc etc
- TBS Rock and sand. Another 150 pounds of rock and 250 pounds of sand
- GC also built me a custom frag tank
- I will also have a large remote cryptic sump in play. GEO is making the sump so that it will be able to handle far more than then what the new display would need.

My current situation is that I am going to consolidate 2 tanks down into this new tank. The firs tank, is an older Red Sea Max S500 that has been running in 3 different house holds over the course of about 8 years and is a mixed reef. I have a space invader that's about the size of dodge ball. I also have a Reefer 250 that is nearly all acro. The tank will start out SPS dominate. All the non SPS will come over to the new tank. Down the road, I may pull some out into a display within the fishroom we are crafting. The Reefer is really coming into its own as I type. I am partially sad that I will be breaking it down, but only from the perspective of pride of ownership, not time on task.

Why am I doing this? Why not! It also gets me to focus on one tank. We also have a nano, but, let's just forget I even mentioned its existence... I'll get to this story down the road. Happy wife happy life...

Timeline:
I hope to have the tank in place in 2 weeks. Within a week I want to be water testing with the closed loops with tap water. It's important that I get this right. I imagine testing all the flow will take 1-2 weeks, I do have to work to pay for this madness.

I'll post some pics. I am not sure if they will be in order or not. I'll keep future posts to a singular topic with photos so it is easier to follow:

That's just crazy and amazing that it was a hitchhiker. Did you not see the fish for that period of time? The expensive diet it was given probably helped make it easier to see and catch! :astonished-face:

No, it was about 3 weeks later (I think) my wife actually saw it. It would slide under rocks and into really tight spaces. It was really small when this was the case - maybe 3-4 inches. When I finally got it out, it had to be at least an inch thick. When I took most of the rock out of the tank we literally found two grave yards of empty shells where it was stacking them up. It go so aggressive that it would attempt to bite might fingers if I got close to it. No joke, I researched everything possible. I even tried this based on some success I saw on the internet. Ultimately egg crate the size of the ID of the tank in place and moved to where it was stuck and couldn't hurt itself. Man, was it ticked.

Following along, my 8’ tank shows up in 3 weeks from Joe as well. Mine is drilled for 1.5” Hayward bulkheads and 2 closed loops as well. They are serious prices of plumbing vs those cheap abs bulkheads.

Yeah, you and I both. 1", 1.5" and 2". I even used them in the overflow box. At that point using Hayward bulk heads is like a rounding error on the overage for the budget on this project, lol.

At this point in my life I never thought I would search out videos to ensure I was installing a bulkhead to spec. I was pretty surprised when I talk to the engineers about the tolerances, or lack there of. I get it.

I completely agree the Haywards weee cheap compared to the cepex true union valves and gate valves. I spared no expense on my build either so plumbing was the cheap part lol.

I’m missing a 2 inch Cpex true union. I’ll trade one of these for one of those, lol. I’m currently chasing the rabbit down an actuator control rabbit hole with Firgelli.

Well, I continue to collect parts, pieces and lots of goodies. I anticipate that my sump by GEO should be completed in the next days. Joe over at Glass Cages teased me at the end of the day today with a picture of this sexy beast! I feel like it is almost ready to start getting after it. The contractor was here this week and took the window out in my living room as it is the only way I can get this tank in my house. Contractor starts there work for this project next week. I am pulling about 120 amps into the room for this build and I am putting in plumbing for a sink and also plumbing from my mixing room on the other side of the house. I am looking forward to my 14x10 man cave with one side of the peninsula facing that room and the rest of the house gets the other two views. Look at this sexy beast:

Last night I worked on the lighting rack that will be made out of 2040 Tslot as well as stands for my sump and a 24x24x24 cryptic sump that Joe also made me out of black acrylic.

Last month I acquired these two 300G water containers. I spent a month cleaning them with bleach and letting them sit in the sun airing out after each cleaning with bleach. They were used for water holding tanks for fema trailers. I found them through a friend in the Natchez, MS area.

My old mixing station (2 RODI brutes and 1 salt brute) was not going to cut it for the new system. I plan to do constant water exchanges 24/7. I did learn a lot of lessons that I am applying here. I use Reef Crystals and that stuff mixes super dirty, but is really good salt, at least it really works well for me and about everyone else I know. I used to mix it then run it through a sediment filter before it made it to my display. I am only half way done, I will complete it tomorrow. So, here is my plan...

The bin on the left is the mixing bin. I am using a Reeflo Hybrid for this bin. I'll mix 250 gallons at a time. It's plumbed with 1.5" and 1". For the first 24 hours I will just mix it with high turn over pushing through the 1.5" pipe. Then I will run it through a 25 micro sediment filter for another 24 hours. From here I will pump the water through a 5 micron filter and then a 1 micron filter before it hits the tank on the right, which I am calling the display storage tank. I will run awc 24x7 straight from the bin on the right. I will also have a 3/4 line plumbed from the tank on the right to sink the contractors are plumbing in for the fish/man cave I am creating on one side of the new tank.

I don't plan on cleaning these bins but once a year. This worked well before, just not at this scale. But, using 3 filters should really keep the container on the right clean, or cleanER.

This is my old mixing room. It's a utility room off my garage, the 2 storage tanks are 3 feet to my left on the garage side of the wall. While the contracts are here I am having them add 2 circuits to this room. Also, we are going to put a tankless water heater in the attic directly above this water heater, which obviously replaces the one you see. This room will become a frag, QT/Hospital/observation room. As well as storage for my "stuff". I am going to leave the RODI station in place. Also, out of view to my left are 2 brutes that store RODI. This is not for the salt bins, this is for top off. I plan to fill the bin on the left with RODI. I think I should be able to fill it in around 24-30 hours. I don't like to start/stop my RODI system. I find that when I simply purge it for 5 minutes before I put it in service it really works well. So, I have about 95g of RODI, when it gets to about 20G it will fill the system. For the big tanks, I plan to start that filling process manually.

I'll show my lighting rack tomorrow.

I should add that the brown 32g bin that is on the white buckets has been cooking rocks for about 14 months. For about the last 8 months I have one of my tanks doing 2g a day for awc that is dumped into that bin. It automatically overflows into the sink. About once a month I put some shrimp in there. But, due to it being about 1 inch from the water heater it's pretty warm, so I am not sure how effective it will be. The cryptic sump that Joe made me is 55g and I think about 50g is useable. I plan to put all this rock in that cryptic sump. I am going to stop the water from flowing into the bin for a week and measure po4. I am hoping it is close to the value for the tank that I am pulling the water from. I haven't checked it in 6 months.

The level of planning and detail is super impressive to me as a newbie to the hobby. Are you a plumber or engineer or in some other related field, or have you simply picked up insane skills over the years?

I actually have a PhD. I studied at the university of YouTube and wrote a thesis based on asking just enough question to drive people bat poop cray cray :)

Need to fix a leak and add a couple unions, the store was out. Wet tested. Now to get the last bits of tap water out of these and start making some RODI. But I do need to wire it all up, and bring an energy bar to this.

I never had the chiller hooked up to this much water before. In the past I had about 50 gallons of salt mixed that I would use for a water change for the Max 500. I had another brute of salt mix that is (still) used for AWC for the reefer. For the AWC I didn’t care about temps, I was only doing 3k ML at a time. But for the 50G I would use most of it when I did a water change for the Max, so I would use the chiller to get it down to what I needed. It has worked flawlessly for that. So I am using the Iwaki 40RT. I’m not sure if more volume would be better or worse in this scenario. But over 60 minutes I dropped 250g 3 degrees.
