TANK TALK: Our community is full of passionate aquarists. Tell us about one of the most memorable experiences you’ve had with the reef community.

I just came back to the reefing hobby last year after a ~15 year hiatus. I didnt really know anyone in highschool who kept fish let alone saltwater. This year I ran into someone I went to highschool with who helps run the local reef club. Was funny seeing him at the local fish store and both of us going “are you….”

Pretty funny to see who you know who is into reefing.

My most memorable experience with the reefing community would have to be way back when I first started. It’s the time I had a “manager” at my LFS attack me because I was buying water and their sw was mixed wrong. I caught it and came back told them and he claimed I messed with it and tried to trample their reputation ect (I quietly brought to their attention avoiding other customers when I told them) and then he tried to start a fight with me in the store shoving me and trying to wrestle me to the floor.

That was the most memorable reefing experience I’ve ever had. That said I have tons of great memories from my 2 decades of reefing. From backyard frag swaps to all the reef club meetings and great friends I’ve made in the hobby.

Just got a new 75g tank that is currently cycling. We moved almost 3 years ago so I sold the old tank and downsized to a 20g. I have been waiting to jump back in. This custom lid would be amazing as currently I have a standard glass lid and do not like it at all. The autofeeder would be amazing because there is absolutely no way I can feed my fish as often as they need to be feed. Both of these items are absolutely amazing pieces of equipment/art.

Definitely visiting @Joe Glass Cages with the group. Was an awesome camping trip. And meeting everyone in person. Putting names with usernames and faces.

There's a guy that lives down the road about 3 miles from me. I've been to his house a couple of times purchasing corals. He was a high school kid with a full blown coral farm downstairs. He had his own online coral store for several years before he "retired" to go to college. He was always friendly and loved talking corals with people.

Also, @Epic Aquaculture is another one I've had conversations with. Very knowledgeable and friendly, great priced corals, and a super enthusiastic guy! Another local that I've had the pleasure of meeting and talking to in person several times.

We have a local store who does auctions on fb and we’ve had a lovely experience with him. Also the closest lfs is very knowledgeable and friendly and helps us out with any questions we have. We recently started up a club and I’m looking forward to going to others places and seeing their setups

Yeah that would be amazing!
I want to add leafy seadragon to my list also :p
Leafy's need cold water and are almost impossible to acquire. There is only one person who has a permit to capture pregnant leafys, catch the new born and return the female to the same spot in the ocean. He supplies the huge aquariums around the world.

TANK TALK: Our community is full of passionate aquarists. Tell us about one of the most memorable experiences you’ve had with the reef community.
Growing up (50yrs ago), a family friend had a really interesting tank in his basement. It was not pristine, it had algae, but I was fascinated. Last month, he was vacationing near my house and we met him and his wife for lunch, before taking them to visit with my parents. He happened to see my tank in the house and was very interested in what I had and how much things had changed.

His tank was a 40 tall in the wall. It has two floresenct tubes above it. And the fish he netted out of the Chesapeake Bay. The most fun was a blue crab he kept in the tank. He would feed it, let it grow and at some point, it would slough into a soft crab and would become lunch. A new smaller crab would be dropped in the tank the next week.

I have had a tank bubbling most of my life since.

Official entry: about to set up the tank and need a nice lid to keep the wrasses from jumping out!

Would also love to set up the Avast auto feeder in the sump with the return pump section to feed the fish when i'm away

TANK TALK: The reef aquarium hobby is incredibly rewarding but can be full of challenges for the novice and veteran alike. Tell us about what draws you to the hobby. What do you find most rewarding?
The fish are way cooler than most freshwater fish and I get a significant amount of more enjoyment watching the reef. The colors are more vibrant, the fish are more graceful, and the corals just add a splash of "Wow!"

What drew me to make the move to want to start a reef aquarium is reading and watching the pictures posted on this forum and YouTube. I knew beforehand that there would be challenges and was hesitant about it, but as I saw so many reefers (both novices and veterans) with successful tanks, I said to myself that I could do it too. I love dealing with challenges and even better is knowing that I've overcame that challenge. I also needed a hobby that I can enjoy and watching/relaxing to it every morning till evening.

I really love the fish. I have two clowns who are the oldest residents in the tank (6 years now) and just seeing them thrive makes me happy. That’s the most rewarding for me, seeing happy healthy fishes.

Definitely full of challenges. I still remember the first reef tank I saw when I was a child at LFS.

Nowhere near as impressive as what we see today, but it was magnificent to a young little guy. All the amazing variety of life that we get to keep in a box of water, is truly what I love. Not just the beautiful and colorful corals, but all the little organisms that help keep our reefs in a box alive and thriving!

Learning to keep ALL the biology thriving! That's the goal and a rewarding experience thus far!

I think it's the tasks. I maybe have undiagnosed ADD and i do go into hyper focus modes, and projects do that to me a lot but thankfully I don't abandon my fixations but i do get bored from time to time but tanks have aways sort of kept me busy, testing and cleaning and reading and identifying, i got a Neo Shrimp tank for my office first but then added salt after 20 years. (downstairs i have my giant goldish and random breeding guppy tank and sons glow tank)

The challenge of maintaining a healthy thriving reef is what keeps me coming back for more every Time it whoops my butt. We are all gluttons for punishment in this hobby. They always say inbreeding you can take a break but you can never really quit.
