We ask this guyJust looked that up, and that species looks super close too.
Other than cutting off a polyp or two and inspecting the skeleton, what are some other ways to get a positive ID on a coral?
That is a nice pectinia - looks like its doing well. I was abel to get a piece of that space invader pectinia, and and hav e it growing on my softy rock.Hard to pick a favorite, but lately I've been adoring my pectinia, bottom left corner.
Started as a $5 frag the soze of a thumb nail. Nice to watch them grow up.That is a nice pectinia - looks like its doing well. I was abel to get a piece of that space invader pectinia, and and hav e it growing on my softy rock.
DipsastraeaWe ask this guy
@encrustingacro hello can we please have an ID on the coral in post 1?
Suggestions are
Acanthastrea Echinata
Fluted Moon Coral
dipsastraea
It appears to be Dipsastraea speciosa. @encrustingacro can probably confirm/correctly ID though. Family Merulinidae can be trickyI am honestly not sure - I know it came out of Australia, and it has been IDed as a a type of acanthastrea coral, Acanthastrea Echinata, even a favia, but none of them fit perfectly.
The dome shape is one of the reason I like it so much. it's not hollow inside - its basically a solid core and is growing outwards. it has some serious heft and weight to it - at least it did that last time I picked it up, when it was 3/4 of its current size
This is that same colony from about 4 years ago
I liked when we could just call all these faviaIt appears to be Dipsastraea speciosa. @encrustingacro can probably confirm/correctly ID though. Family Merulinidae can be tricky
*edit : I was too slow lol
You still can, you'd just be wrong.I liked when we could just call all these favia
Encrusting acro gave me permission and approval to refer to them as ex-favia so pfffffttttYou still can, you'd just be wrong.
Merulinids (and most other corals for that matter) are not IDable to the species level due to either molecular data not matching up with phenotypes or ambiguous type material. On top of that, some taxonomists have assigned random phenotypes to species that don't match up with their type specimens, which adds another layer of complication. It appears to be Dipsastraea speciosa. @encrustingacro can probably confirm/correctly ID though. Family Merulinidae can be tricky

I wouldn't recommend sites like sealifebase or CotW, as they are rife with misidentifications.
Favia I think. It's been a really slow grower so the bigger it gets the more I love it.Really digin' that coral - favia, or something else?
Wow the color on these are amazing!!! What kind of lights do you run?How am I supposed to pick?!?!?? Ahhhhh!!!!!
Where is that last goni from?! Looks amazing!
