Dip aside my biggest struggle is maintaining steady alkalinity

I am using all for reef to attempt to maintain alk, ca, and trace elements

My system isn’t always alk stable for whatever reason and I decided I want to automate alkalinity and move away from all for reef

This khguardian will test my tank 6x a day and read the alk, and dose alk solution as needed to maintain the level I want. It will also monitor temp, ph, and orp. Great!

So, that leaves - ca, and trace elements

For ca I bought reef fusion which supplements CA but also provides some trace elements

So I’m thinking the plan going forward would be the kh guardian for alk, testing 6x a day, and auto dosing as needed

Calcium depletes much slower, I can test that…weekly? And supplement with fusion or 2 part ca mix as needed to maintain 400-450

And then…a dedicated, more broad trace product ? Such as? Do they make a good trace supplement like all for reef but without the alk and ca portion?

Im pretty sure tropic marin a and k is AFR without Ca and Alk.

Ifni wasntnusing AFR, Id likely use that system.

I would never in a million years depend on current hobby controllers tonmanage my alk, test and notify, yes.

Would also be more concerned about notnbeing able to stabilize alk with AFR. I can dial in alk withnAFR/kalk combo with precision day after day withna 3dkh/day demand.

Some days I have measurable consumption. And some days I don’t. Some weeks my tank consumes more than others.

It might be a stretch but maybe…adding acros will help me stabilize, by having some corals with regular consumption and steady growth. Most lps are consuming calcium regularly and heavily, but light on alkalinity demand.

Perhaps my issues could be related to my corals to a degree ?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been using AFR for almost 2 years and I’m a fan. It keeps me within 1dkh normally. I’ve had a few times where it’s drifted low on me and I need to manually correct alk.

The khguardian came highly recommended, they are the first to invent the technology and now it’s been out for almost a decade, has been through the new product growing pains, several revisions, and have the tech seemingly stable. I’ve read tons of good reviews on this product and hope it will live up to its claims. Worst case is I can easily turn it into a daily automated tester and go back to manually dosing alk and ca via AFR or two part

Sounds like a good plan. I would see if you can determine why consumption drops some days, maybe theres an identifiable pattern. Within 1dkh is pretty solid and everyone has dips but thats where additional testing and a little carbonate can make the minor correction and then you just add a mL or two extra of AFR on a go forward.

The only time i really see a drop in consumption is if i deliberately do something to cause it like alot of fragging or alot of guests raising CO2.

A lot of moving parts there.

I see all these posts and everyone's systems and processes they use. I'm over here like, uhhhh, I test parameters maybe weekly or every other week, set my doser up a year ago+ and don't have to worry. Have my fleece roller going, so change the reefmat once every 6-8 weeks...

Everyone makes it so complicated. I set everything, and forget it. I maybe clean my glass once or twice week, that's it. That's all the work our tank needs, oh and clean out the skimmer every two or three weeks.

I think a ton of people just overly complicate everything for no reason. Stability is all that matter mainly, imo.

I use redsea alk, mag, CA, and trace elements. And let my doser work as intended.

I think a lot have issues they make by chasing numbers or trying to fix a problem that isn't there.

Like @billyocean taught me when I was starting, best advice ever. "K. I. S. S"

Just keep it simple people!

I also use AFR and mine holds steady for the season. I have increased consumption in spring and fall when I have windows open.

Summer actually seems to be the lowest, keeping the house sealed up because of the heat and humidity.

Winter I crack open windows from time to time.

I have it on the doser 6 times a day, just dial it up or down as needed.

I'm on same route but I added wc at least once a month now.

Couldn’t agree more. Don’t forget @billyocean advice on tank set up. “What do you do Billy?” Reply, “Uh, socks and rocks. That’s it. Makes it simple”.

One must also remember that every tank out there is different, and will need tweaking to find its sweet spot. Don’t try to make it like someone else’s tank. Find its own sweet spot and keep it there. It will love you for it.

I mean it could be a scam like roadside steaks.

Or it could be someone who is trying to make a buck on their hobby.

Heck I wouldn't be surprised if @billyocean has a roadside coral stand set up in front yard.

Worked for Rob. If I recall he bought something from a roadside coral place.

I hope you picked up one of those bonsai trees. Goes great near an aquarium
