I have a printer. I just can't get the hang of the design software to build something from the group up. Thingyverse has allowed me to download maybe 2 shroom boxes but meh
TinkerCAD is a good place to start. Fusion is complicated and so is blender. I've used both a bit with online tutorials but keep going back to TinkerCAD. No it doesn't have all the bells and whistles but I'm still learning new things on it.

What are you thinking about designing or what is it you are wanting?

Also a good place to start is downloading some 3D files and editing them to your liking.

i'm thinking of asking for a starter 3d printer for my birthday, do you have recommendations? i'm not trying to start out printing crazy stuff, just some "simpler" stuff for my tanks and around the house.

Tank is showing a lot of progress. That Mango Tango was a freebee and thanks @SBB Corals it is now one of my prized pieces. Still between 140 to 148 ppm alk but getting it flattened out a little better this week.

it feels like a lot of school districts are stay way earlier this year, which means getting out at the end of the year a lot earlier. seems like that could get kinda lonely for those two weeks if not many other schools are out, you know?

That's a tough one, @Projects with Sam has much more experience and can answer it better than I can.

But I have a Ender 5 S1, I felt it was a good compromise between affordable and quality. After using it I wish I could afford a Bambu, but that was outside my budget. I have thought about the K1 from Creality too but some people are having issues with the first run, it's brand new.

Ender 3 s1 Pro is a good choice, you also have the Ender 3 V2 that goes on sale at microcenter often for $100. Cheap and doesn't break the bank, but lacking in features.

Then there's the Sovol, which I think @tbrown is thinking about getting.

The cheaper printers can have a lot more tinkering and headaches involved but can print with the same resolution just slower. Lower temp hot ends, bed slingers vs stationary z beds. You can also upgrade and mod them a lot.

Creality has sells on the Enders often so it's worth watching for a deal.

I'm by far not an expert and just got started 4 or 5 months ago. Something I have always wanted to try, so it's another hobby for me.

Maybe pop over to the 3D thread and check things out.

I have also been fiddling with 3D scanning objects. I just don't have the spare time to perfect it yet. You can scan objects and make them into 3D files.

@Kasrift
I’m in your town right now, SD, and apparently there is a hurricane headed this way. what the heck is a Hurricane?
I left town. Hurricane means don't be by the coast. We had this twice before and the boardwalk at the beach completely flooded in Del Mar and Pacific beach.

I got a ender 3 v2 and like it. I paid $150 (with mods)... im not expert but what I learned so far I can say:
Do you like to tinker? If so an ender might be fine, you can mod the whole thing. If you don't, you might want to spend more on a model that comes ready to go out the box. The best being Bambu. There are several nuances that effect a print but to give you a simple example. If the print bed isn't level, the print will usually fail. An ender you have to manually level the bed. Usually this is done by hand prior to every print (for the best print quality). Higher end machines auto bed level. (Manual still recommended but picture a high end automated reef tank... in theory less hands in the tank required.)

And manuals don't explain everything, the online community is invaluable. There are so many little things that can affect prints. Bambu is pricey but I'd love to have one. The only thing I don't like is the closed ecosystem. There have been a few like that and when the company folds so does your ability to operate the machine till someone cracks it.
