Like what any plywood tank would be coated in. there is a paintable silicone, I used in my terrarium, I forget the name. It's supposed to be 100% Silicone, so should be reef safe. CUC can take care of algae.Ohhhhh.... You're talking about physically building the tank with plywood sides and bottom and only glass or acrylic front.
You'd need to consider what coating to use on the inside. I have looked into it previously and there is a marine boat coating that was supposed to be reef tank safe. Another consideration for an extra barrier of protection could be fiberglass on the plywood prior to sealing? Also a consideration is the lack of a smooth surface. More bumpiness makes it easier for algae to attach and harder for us to remove.
