I Received the most recent (last, I swear!!!) delivery of corals today (from surprise!! ARC is having a live sale and auction!!!) I looked at all the happy assortment of colors, types, and textures in my tank and thought to myself, "I think I finally have everything on 'THE LIST'. I may have actually pulled it off!" Then I turned on the flashlight and looked at the tank in the dark... The encrusters are crusting, the stomatellas are PROLIFERATING, everyone's feeders are out, the zoas are popping babies and even the lobster molted! The tank isn't clean (I'm skeert to look under the new microscope) and the parameters are wonky (I may have been happier in my non-Hanna ignorance), but I've never seen the residents happier!! I'll take that over gorgeous perfection, any day!! (Right?!?)Our tanks are often a work in progress. If you're greedy like me, you're always thinking of ways to make your tank bigger, better, and more full of life! Maybe you have a goal in mind that you're trying to reach, or maybe you've set the bar and are perfectly happy with how it's looking right now. Let's discuss it!
On a scale from 1 to 10, how happy are you with how your tank looks? Is there anything you want to change about it?
(1 = I just need to start over...10 = It's the most beautiful thing I've ever laid my eyes on!)
asI voted 4. Fish are fine but I only have a few boring softies (too many green hairy mushrooms, Kenya tree, GSP). I have a hard time keeping Zoas and LPS happy in my big tank. My tank just looks dull.
I say an 8. I am happy with the tank and scape. At this point it just needs to fill in.
I voted 7, im generally happy with my tank, just wish it was filled in more.
Same, I'm at an 8, it's been a long journey, now I just want it filled in more..8. I’m happy with it, and it’s been quite the journey. Definitely not perfect. I think we are overly critical of our own tanks, and sometimes need the perspective of others to help us appreciate them more.
Coralline taking off is a super great sign that you’re on track. I’m crossing my fingers and toes for you that the next couple of months will be a steady rise to feeling like a 10 for your tank!I’m at a 5. Tank (waterbox 150.4) is one year old and still struggling with nutrient control and algae. Fish are great but I need a couple more, and most lps and sps seem to be growing. Tuxedo urchins are cleaning up rocks slowly but effectively, and coralline is starting to take off. Hoping to be able to start adding more corals in a month or two so long as the algae coverage continues to lessen.
My DT lighting is about 17" off the water surface and the tank has about 18" of water. Zoas are in the bottom 1/4" of the tank. Using a 4 bulb AquaticLife hybrid fixture with a single Kessil A360 right in the center, which is not over any zoas. No access to a PAR meter but my light levels should not be very high at all. I have some Utter Chaos in another tank (Evo 13.5) with a Kessil A160 Tuna Blue only about 14" above and they are happier. How high is your lighting? My zoas are happier in lower light (80-100 par- and I just estimate). Since I added fish, the tank is filthy, but the corals love it. It's only when I get up past 1.024ish in salinity that they start to clean up. The Kenya trees tell me if my phos is too high. The gonis tell me when the mg is to high. So don't clean the tank, drop the light, watch solubility, pH, nitrates, phos and mag.. and the zoas will love you!

I'm at about 8 right now. Nothing is ever perfect for me.
I was happy with my rock arrangement and had plans for how I would eventually add coral. Then I got a Diamondback Goby and he has other plans for his tank.
