You going bare bottom or sand?
i'll be adding sand, bare bottom tanks are not visually pleasing to me at all :/, and plus i want some sand-enjoying critters. i have ~80 pounds of live rock in tubs in my garage and will be getting 50 pounds more (i hope), and then am planning on approx. 160 pounds of live sand

How about a little giveaway!!

Tell me how you first got into the hobby. Was it from watching a show? A distant relative had a saltwater tank? I would love to know!!

I will pick a winner at 3pm est to win a $40 gift card!
as a lifelong freshwater enthusiast i was always weary and nervous to try saltwater, but watching some amazing tanks in people's homes made me pull the trigger and i havent looked back since!

I blame my mom. I got my first fish tank for Christmas when I was 10. I've had fish tanks almost ever since - often multiple tanks. When I left for college my mom got a saltwater tank with an eel and a grouper. I'd come home for weekends and breaks and feed them live goldfish. It was so fun to watch them hunt and eat, but my favorite part was watching the little blue leg hermits scurrying around the rocks! Later, after my wife and I were married and I had 8 freshwater tanks running I stopped by a thrift shop on my way home and saw a 75 tall - the same tank size my mom had! $5???? So I bought it, brought it home, built a stand, and got some equipment and took the plunge into salt.

My first ever post here on R2R, so hope you guys feel special! I’ve had freshwater tanks my whole life and always wanted to try saltwater. When I finally moved into a house (albeit renting) I knew that was the time. I started off very wrong not knowing about certain essential equipment and purchasing fish that were not appropriate for beginners/my current setup. Through lots of money and trial and error, I’ve learned a lot about this hobby (addiction?). I’m glad to have LRO in my backyard for their wide selection and knowledge.

Going to many aquariums, I fell in love with saltwater aquariums, I always liked how everything in saltwater has a unique personality from the fish and the corals and the colors beat out freshwater by far. I always wanted to start a saltwater tank and decided one day I was going to take the leap and did, I love the learning that also comes along with it, but by far the serenity that's in watching a salt tank and that's how I got started in my saltwater tanks.

Sappy story but the honest truth lol. When my late ex husband passed away Jack had hundreds of dollars saved up in allowance. We told him he could spend it on whatever he wanted. Well we went to our local lfs and Jack wanted to use his money to buy a tank. After weeks of his 10 year old self eating the pros and cons of salt or fresh water he decided on salt. So with his money he bought a 32 gallon biocube. Well that was the beginning of the disaster that became our bio cube lol. After killing like 6 fish, a star fish and a nem Kev stepped in even though he didn’t live with us he started taking care of the bio cube. Then we bought a house moved in together and bought our 180.5 WB. Fast forward to today and we have a thriving tank!!!
2017- bought bio cube
2018 - Kev took over bio cube
2020 - bought our hiuse
2021- got our WB
2023- 2 years later and we have officially gotten the hand of SW and have maxed out our bio laps for our WB.
2024+ I smell a future 200+ WB in our future lol

I really got hooked when I was 6 or 7. Went to the keys and captured some of the sandy tan and green RFAs you find in knee deep water. I brought them home in a McDonald’s cup. My dad would let me feed them while he fed his snowflake eels. This was the start of a decades long addiction haha!

It was definitely awesome as a kid. Only downside was that it was really, really rare to meet anyone that marine/saltwater tanks in those days, so it was difficult to share the interest with others!

Hi
Got started as my father was very sick before he passed away and he needed to have something to keep him occupied while in his bed. So I started a small tank next to the bed so he could have something to look at except TV. He loved the clowns and a few corals and would tell me in detail what the animals did while I was gone. After he passed I kept the tank and hot a bigger one as I was hooked! That was some Yeats ago and a late entry for me into the hobby. Still at it years later....
