when should I calibrate? I got it not long ago, and it was pre calibrated(I checked) isn't 80* good though for a tank? isn't the temp range 74- ~82?

It should be calibrated every time you use it with a 32 ppt solution.

Temperature is finicky. That range is kinda old-school as well to be honest.

Nobody really knows the exact origin of that range, the guess is that it was from measuring different coral reef locations.

Coral typically tolerate lower temperatures better than higher ones. I would encourage keeping the tank between 76 and 78 as the max. Above 78 you start to see more stress, bacterial outbreaks, more STN/RTN, and a variety of other problems with fish and inverts.

To be clear, yes, you can get coral and fish, etc. to adapt to the temperature, but that's like playing on "Hard Mode" for absolutely no benefit.

The first is using a premixed refactometer solution that’s guaranteed to be at 35ppm (or whatever it says on the bottle). It’s like a small eye dropper bottle. I use that to calibrate the refactometer. Then, I clean it, and use pure RODI water to make sure that it says 0.

That’s how you can confirm it’s calibrated.

Some people just use the RODI approach though and while it can tell you if it’s wildly off (like an RODI reading gives you 10ppm) I wouldn’t trust just that from a calibration stand point

I always use on a high feed tank . And nanos. Anything that could go real bad really fast goes even quicker in a small tank. Did you get a skimmer yet?

can I just buy super fine floss?
wait
that would clog water wouldn't it?
1 day skimmate. My maintenance goes as such. Foam pad sock. Remove pad after day 1. Remover sock day two. Wash and repeat. Baste rock every other day before sock change. Let water clear before replacing sock. If i do any other way first chamber overflows to second and does not filter.
