Beautiful fish, are they active swimmers or do they hide frequently?

They are very active. Similar to a tang. They are very hard to get eating in aquariums. Also they are delicate and proper QT and a disease free tank is a must with them IMO.

What is hee eating now? I've always wanted one but haven't heard of many successfully keeping them long term. Do they need sponges in their diet?

My normal food is a mixture of frozen, mysis, brine, chopped clams, spirulina, etc. Touch of garlic and Selcon/vitachem.

He also eats tons of nori.

He will eat flake as well but I don't feed it regularly.

Truthfully, with idols the secret to keeping them and fattening them up initially is nori. If you can get them grazing on it you’ll have a good start. Disease and other aspects of their diet/environment are also critical.

Here is an article on the subject if anyone is interested:

Also thank you everyone for the compliments!

I am going to cut him loose tomorrow!

Out of acclimation this evening swimming freely about the DT! Tangs chased him around for the first half hour making sure he knew who was in charge. So far so good!

Nice Idol. How is he with SPS? I had one for a couple of years. Great fish. For those who are thinking about one, they need multiple feedings daily, and are not the easiest to keep fat a healthy.

Definitely finicky eaters!

I have barely any sps. He hasn't messed with the little bit of Monti I have.
Beautiful fish ! Always been afraid to try one.

Thanks! I got lucky with this guy, tough as nails. It was my first try at one. Went through QT like a champ, then bounced right back to his normal self after this infection. He was a little bit of a pain to get eating though when I first got him. As mentioned above Nori has to be a key part of the diet. My DT also gets a mixture of frozen foods with added vitamins twice daily.

Gorgeous fish. I’ve read they aren’t reef safe but it doesn’t seem like that from your pics!

He does nip. He definitely keeps my Kenya trees under control. He has chomped a few zoa's. Which I literally have hundreds and hundreds. I don't keep any insane coral. Some hammer, leathers, shrooms, frogspawn, GSP, Kenya, and tons of zoa's etc.
