Thank you! I opted to use the store credit for a pyramid butterfly.

Cool! Just be aware that pyramids are really prone to Neobendenia flukes (I've actually never had one that didn't come in with these!). I've found that hyposalinity at 1.012 for 30 days will easily take care of that though.

Using prazi against Neobenedenia is tough - the eggs are sticky and can stay viable for 12 days. You may need 3 to 5 prazi doses spaced 8 days apart to break an active infection. I find 30 days of hypo to be a better treatment.

Also, avoid buying any of these that have a bumped/injured snout.

Its crazy but the Moorish Idols I see here in europe do look quite well compared to years ago.
Almost every specimen looks healthy and eats quickly.

Imo they also come from asia.

They could be from East Africa, that is a common source for the EU, and the quality from there is very good.

I'm sorry you lost him they are beautiful fish I would honestly try again. I've had my Idol for six months now, now I know this isnt a success story yet but my grandmother had hers for almost a decade, these are her tips and some that I have learned over the last 6 months.

IMO these fish are not hard to keep just like the copperband butterfly it all comes down to meeting their specific needs they just require more maintenance

- only buy idols seen in the store that are eating well, these fish do not ship well so make sure you see that it is healthy first
- larger specimens do better at transitioning to captivity, the Idol should be the largest and most aggressive fish at the time of introduction.
- established live rock for the fish to graze on is extremely important, these fish are constantly eating in the wild and in order to have success in your tank he needs to graze 24/7 which bring us to the next point.
- feeding, these fish eat all day and I watch mine eat at night, if you see an empty nori clip it is best to top it off so he has food 24/7, they can also benefit from meaty foods such as live black worms, fresh clams, prepared frozen foods, but the most important thing to these fish is high fiber which you can get through the Nori
- swimming space, it is not enough t have a 6 foot tank, you need a rock structure that allows the Idol to swim in, out, and around of caves and overhangs to mimic his natural feeding behaviors.
- species specific tank, I'm not saying it needs to be the only species in your tank but your tank needs to be specifically set up to house an idol all other fish will do just fine in a tank that supports and idol.
- Flow, similar to the Achilles tang these fish live in areas with decent current, your tank needs to have enough flow to support acros if you want to keep this fish.
- tank maintenance, these fish eat a lot which means plenty of nutrients, make sure your skimmer or other form of nutrient export is ready to handle the bio load

I hope this helps
