Great point! Couldn't agree more Jason is there picking the best and not wasting a single thing.

Thanks for the support.

Big thing to me is does he leave most of the parent in the ocean?
That I can not say, but I sure hope he does.

coral, and if he leaves colonies intact. I just saw this thread and felt obligated to say something. Also, there are laws getting ready to be passed which may make the import totally illegal for about 53 species. I forget the name of the laws but you can google it. Ill post a link later.

I'm sure i'll receive some crap for this, but I think this hobby should really start relying more on aquaculture and even mariculture.. Fact is harvesting like this is destroying our reefs. We should open our eyes to this and use the technology we have to start sustaining our hobby, responsibly. Otherwise it will be gone, just as quickly as the coral reefs themselves.

I'd be far more pleased to see you setting up a professional aquaculture system.

Collecting wild coral is not destroying the reef if manage properly.
It is the same thing as pruning a forest and not doing clear cutting.
As in the case with Indonesia, wild corals are collected and controlled by yearly quota to each species allowed for collection.
The number of yearly quota for each species is vary base on growth rate, this quota number is available as public information at CITES website.
Wild corals only collected in 1% area of total reef area in Indonesia and collecting site being rotated continually as to allow regrowth.
Total reef area in Indoesia is about 10.8 million km2 = 14% of the world reefs. Majority of reefs in Indonesia are good to excellent condition.
Beside wild collecting, Indonesia also produce over 1 million pcs of cultured corals in 2013 for about 49 species.
Another 20 species will be add on for 2014 harvest cultured coral quota.
Of all these cultured species harvest, 10% is used for coral transplanting at reef that was damaged from nature occurrences.
Because of the success of cultured species production, 28 species of Indonesia yearly wild coral quota has been significantly reduced and replace with
these established cultured species.

I am sure Jason is not taking part in reef destruction. He loves what he does best growing corals and diving.
He is taking another notch to this hobby by collecting corals that he knows can grow well in captivity.
Very well done Jason!

If you read my previous post, I specifically said I was not calling you out or accusing you of anything. Like I said I meant no offense, it is just one mans opinion.

i am friends with the exporters in indo and importers in USA . All coral inspected in indo by indo fish and wildlife. They are also inspected by usa fish and wildlife when they come to USA they go through fish and wildlife with proper cites permits. All this is so both countries make sure harvest is done properly ! Also when I'm working with the guys in indo collecting I tell them to leave a piece of the colony in the ocean when ever possible as my own personal precaution ! I love the reefs and have no intention to destroy what I love!!!also I frag and grow the coral when in my systems!

Jason can you post the video you did a few months back of your facility to show everyone what you are currently doing for the aquaculture part of the hobby?

I know I'd love to see it again, just to drool all over my keyboard...

I personally pledge that I will happily aquaculture anything Jason sends to me. It will be a heavy burden, but I will willingly carry and endure this hardship...

I am just curious and maybe jason or someone else could help me out but why is it that indonesia is really the only place with chalices and sick ones at that? I am an avid diver and went on a liveaboard trip in australia and out of the 20+ dives, not one chalice or even acan. The SPS was out of this world but not much in the way of LPS except some lobos and normal brains. Is it a temp thing or just a certain area like how mystery wrasses and helfrichis are only found in marshall islands. Also jason I am planning a trip to indo in the years to come and want to know your opinion on the best island to dive. Ive herd and read sulawesi is amazing but want your opinion since you have been and know so much about the reefs there
