Question of the day. Due to how tall the 55 would be in my stand I have decided against it. I wouldn't really be able to get the collection cup out of my tank. That leaves me a with some different ideas. I have a 29 gallon sump already that I could go with just no room for a refugium. I could hook this up until I get a custom sump made. The other thing going through my head is can I cut a 55 Gallon down a few inches?

Third Idea, how hard would it be to connect two 29 gallons, one sump one refugium/return

Drill both 29s, install bulkheads and plumb them together. Done. A lot of 29s are tempered though. I drilled one and it didn't work out so good!

I think I am going to go with the Trigger Systems Ruby 36s. It's git perfect dimensions for my tank and a good size refugium.

Quick question, how many of you run a refugium? Am I over obsessing about a refugium?

This lighting issue is bugging me. Halide or LEDs. I like LEDs but can't afford to drop 1200 on AI Sols or name brand LEDS on a 6 foot aquarium

I started out with MH, then went to T5, and now I'm all about LED's. I know it's hard to think about a big drop of cash, but if I had just bought LED's to begin with the cost of bulb/ballst replacements, I would have had more cash in my pocket for more corals.

Yeah man, if you want the light you need you'll need LEDs or MH because they dont really make T5s that would span your tank, so you'd need twice the bulbs. LEDs are a larger initial investment but you don't spend as much on the periphery. As in if you got MH you'll need a chiller, larger electric bill, bulbs are expensive. If you want to eventually keep the nicer stuff, go with LEDs, they also retain their value well, so you can resale most at a premium. Also, if you ever change tank sizes, you wont have to buy all new fixtures.

Busy day. I bought a Reef Keeper lite controller and a JBJ Auto top off system. Thanks to Seth too for the Meteor Shower and the Rainbow Acans I picked up today!

I'm way partial to MHs but I think everyone knows that.

Cory, I've got two 400W MHs on my 120 and don't really need a chiller. I think it depends more on your room temperature. I've got a large window air conditioner in the room that keeps it fairly cool.

one might consider that a room chiller haha. but when you have central heat and air, and it's not in the main living area, like a dedicated fish room, the temp in that room can raise substantially, and yet the AC won't kick on because the house temp hasnt raised. just too many disadvantages to MH for me to ever go back, too hot, too much electricity, high replacement cost(tired of hearing about $15 bulbs, they don't compare when you get into high end corals. You could grow leathers with CFL bulb) No tuneability with MH either, you either raise or lower them.same with T5s on these issues. exhaust fans are loud. there are too many nice brands of LEDS out there, that have been proven in huge well known systems to not take the dive. you can make all the excuses in the world, they've been around long enough for the "new and untested" hype to have worn off. they work great, the pros far outweigh any cons when compared to other light sources.

TL;DR
If you won't skimp on other aspects of your reef tank, why would you on inarguably the most important aspect? Buy a good light.
