Not really a regular use case, but I've often wondered if a LFS is running sub-therapeutic levels of copper in some of the tanks. I mean, how often does someone actually test the fish water for copper, probably never. Doesn't really change anything, but again, just to satisfy a curiosity.

I think he is talking from a while back, before I ever did any testing.
They had only done research on the low range model.
Ah yes, you have mentioned that before. It made me nervous for a second that their analysis of our high range godsend was unfavorable lol

Certainly an experiment you could do, although I hope most LFS would be forthcoming about their use of copper if you asked them outright. Mine is.

As you know, @Hanna Instruments is on the thread. I think this will probably be one of the first places they post the result of their testing. I know they are still in the process, but that is all I know. Don't have a timeline. I am sure there is a lot that goes into it on their end.

You could always test the bag water to find out. I would say there is a pretty good chance that certian fish are kept in low level sub-therapeutic copper at some LFS's, but not always. Low level copper keeps the fish from showing signs of parasites, but yet not lethargic, or discolored, and eating well so they look good for purchase.

@HotRocks , I just ordered my HI702 this morning. I have been doing daily Cuprion Copper testing (using Salifert Test kit) of my QT tank. I have Marinepure ceramic spheres and a small amount of "live rubble" that I use in the sump of the QT that absorbs a small amount of copper but keeps ammonia down. Should I be calibrating with the certified cuvette that I also ordered each time I test or is there another process I should use to ensure my levels stay consistent? Obviously I can't use the tank water as a base as the levels are constantly changing.

BTW thanks for the extensive testing and sharing!

Glad to hear it!

The calibration kit is just a check. The unit does not have the capability to be calibrated. If it is out of calibration you would have to send back to Hanna. But it is a way to make sure your unit is staying in calibration.

So I guess what I should have asked is, will I use the certified checker cuvette prior to each time I test the tank? I'm assuming there is some type of baseline that needs to be established each time water is tested.

No you won't have to do that it would just be for periodic use. The way the tester works is you put the cuvette into the tester with just your sample water it takes a 0 reading of that. Then you add the reagent and perform the test so essentially it's zeros itself out each time you do a new test.

Just ordered one, I kinda thought the shipping was a bit high, but oh well.

Yeah I think it's free if you spend 100 or more. I just added extra cuvettes and cleaner etc. To get the free shipping.

I have Marinepure ceramic spheres
Keep an eye on the Marinepure. I had a block of it in a QT with copper and meds and had a tremendous bacterial bloom and the Marinepure turned into a big green blob. I think it was due to the low flow through the block. Now I use Biomax in my HOB. Zero copper absorbtion and zero ammonia. Humblefish has had similar results with Seachem Matrix working well.

Thanks for the heads up Big G. I will keep an eye on the spheres This will be my 3rd go around with the same ones and thus far no blooms. I do have them in the "over / under / over" section of my sump so pretty much all water flows through them. I was thinking at some point they would be "saturated" with copper and absorption would be slower. I may have to switch them out for some matrix next go around just to see how that works out. I don't mind adding a couple drops of copper daily as long as I don't have an issue with anything else. Finally decided to try another Powder Blue Tang that's doing well so I'll wait until he's clear and in the DT.
