Yeah so the question is do I trust the tester ppm level or the stated on copper power instructions of 29.56ml/20gallon to get 2.5ppm?
Checker, I do the math to work backwards to 2.0 PPM copper power.

The one time my checker was wrong was when I did horrible math — it was early!

I've used 0.74ml in the 1/2 gallon saltwater.

I'll do one more test later and take there average.

That's up to you. Do you have another way to test like API kit to match?

All the bottles I have tested read between 2.4-2.55.

I personally have faith in the tester by the way my fish are acting. It is 100% possible your bottle of copper power is below the 2.5ppm.

Dose 2-4 gallons when you test again, and you could just use RO water for the sake of testing concentration.

Also copper power comes with no seal on the lid, so hard telling what could have happened between the time it was manufactured and the time you received.

I'm saying if your questioning the tester just dose fresh RO, because Hanna says it works in fresh, we are only awaiting salt accuracy verification

I second the use of more than a half gal. Difficult to be exact. We used 1 gallon and it had the biggest swings (still within .03) at my house. 2-5 gallons would be much easier to measure and be accurate with.

I guess I can shoot for 2 gallons it was easy with those 1 gallon pales with the lines already set up to scoop it in.

Btw my reference bottle was red and reading 1.92ppm
When I tested mine it like a purpleish color @1.90 is that due something to worry about?

As a few of you (@Big G @dwwataz ) may remember from another thread, I recently lost several fish in one of my DT's due to Velvet and am in the early process of setting up QT for treatment of "survivors". @dwwataz included this thread to read. Absolutely incredible findings by @HotRocks, and great teamwork between everyone involved. I am ordering a HI702 and look forward to my "backordered" Hanna email.

To date I've setup QT w/ HOB and a seeded sponge and begun following directions from Emergency Treatment for Marine Velvet Disease by @Humblefish provided by @Big G. Also performed FW dip and chemical bath and transfered fish to a clean QT.

I don't even have the calibration fluid yet. I believe @Big G might.

The test reagent does turn the sample purple.

Unfortunately my CopperPower shipment has been delayed due to weather (snow in Colorado mountains), so I in the mean time I have dosed PraziPro and will do a water change and run carbon prior to dosing CopperPower. I would like to start copper treatment as soon as possible. A LFS (not really that "local") carries Seachem Cupramine. Would this work? What is the recommended therapeutic dosage?

I'm glad you found this thread. It's good stuff. Also glad to hear you are setting up a QT, IMO it's a must in saltwater fish!

Cupramine is ionic copper it has a theraputic range of .35-.50ppm. It is known to be more harsh on certain fish than the forms or chelated copper.

If your dealing with velvet, and can get the cupramine immediately, I'd say it's better than waiting. Velvet kills quick.

Agree entirely. .5 is where I’ve used it.

I have always utilized a QT, but somewhat "old school" in that it consisted of 2-4 weeks observation and treat only if necessary. This and other threads have really changed how I go about my QT process. @HotRocks what are the "certain fish" you mention?

Do you have the calibration check fluid for the tester?

Wait. What? Are you talking about calibration fluid for the Hanna copper handheld checker? Just wondering if I have to order that too. My Hanna checker is not due to arrive for another 2 or 3 weeks, so I should order the calibration fluid now...unless it comes with the tester?

Thanks!

I don't know that it is 100% necessary. I ordered it after the fact, and waiting on my backorder. The checker does not have a calibration adjustment. It's just fluid that you can use to make sure the tester is in calibration if that makes sense. I have been using a pair of testers, and they both read within .01-.02ppm of eachother.

Hum, not sure I understand. In calibration with what? I have calibration fluid for my refractometer, but that calibrates for correct salinity. Do you think it's the same fluid?

Hawkfish are given 2/5 safety for ionic, which is the same as my fairy wrasses for chelated. In other words, it's relatively safe. Coppersafe or copper power would be preferred but given you're dealing with velvet, ionic should be fine.

I do not know the recommended dosing procedure for it with velvet. I know you want to be therapeutic within 48 or so hours, but I don't know the ml/g breakdown

It's fluid you put in the cuvette and test. It is supposed to yeild a certain number like 2.0ppm. It's just a way to periodically check your checker to make sure your readings are accurate.

Just like you use the fluid for refractometer. But no that fluid wouldn't work with checker because it doesn't contain copper.
