From what I'm reading a black velvet damsel is reef compatible. But I just got a Yellow coral polyp and he seems to be picking at it. Is he trying to eat it and going to kill it

If this is happening separate the fish from the coral. Though usually they are reef safe.

Just because a fish is labeled reef safe doesn't always mean it's true. I've had fish and crabs take nips at my zoas and palys before only to realize they don't enjoy the taste. He could be just seeing if it's tasty. I would watch him closely and if he is consuming the polyps then it's time to decided if you want the coral or the fish.
