I like big turbo snails more than any other clean up crew. I have 6 in the 75 gallon and they keep control of algae and will mow down longer stuff more than any other snail. Next up from turbos would be a sea hair but can be tricky to keep long term. If that clean up crew can't handle it I would then use reef flux aka fluconazol to kill it. Worked 2 times for me so far in about 2 years. Never had to scrub anything.

I currently have 3 huge Astraea Turbo Snails and 5 smaller ones in my tank but doesnt seem like any damage is done to the hair algae...I may try to give a sea hare a shot and see how it does. If that doesnt work, then will try the reef flux.

Did you lose anything or had any difficulties when you used reef flux?

I just went through it with my tank.
I used fluconazole for the second time with 2 different tanks. I had GHA in my last 20 gallon Nuvo too.
It took care of it but you have to be patient and turn your skimmer off for a few days. It goes nuts. I left it in for 5 weeks.
Don't let your nitrates and phosphates bottom out like I did twice.
You'll get Dinos.

FWIW i have a Lawnmower Blenny 3.5", Atraea, Cerith, Trochus and turbo snails. Best Hair algae eater for me was my Tiger Conch but he can't climb up the rocks. He devoured the stuff he could reach though.

Have a look at my build thread. I have before and after pics.

Everything in my tank except the hair algae was completely fine while using fluconazol. My chaeto still grew and was also unaffected. Astrea snail are ok for film algae. Mexican turbo snails will eat the longer stuff. If you do use fluconazol make sure to do some research on it. The trick is to keep the algae some what growing so it can consume the medication and also be prepared to run clean gfo as the algae dies because it will release lots of po4 back into the water. I also usually add like another half a dose of fluconazol after the first water change and I keep my carbon out until the 2nd water change at least.

minor update:
The hair algae is starting to disappear after about a 2-3month battle. From dosing NoPOX daily to weekly water changes to manually plucking and scrubbing, I can happily say the tank is looking better! All corals are thriving and growing but I still cannot keep SPS for the life of me...I am going to stop trying SPS until I have an abundance of coralline algae growing (which i can see i have some spots starting to form).

On the other hand...lifted up my screen to feed the fishes the other day and my yellow coris wrasse decides to jump out. Could not find him for the life of me! My tank is in the corner and there were only 2 sides to look on the ground and did not see anything...was hoping that it jumped into the overflow or hit the back wall and landed in the sump but I do not see anything. It has been 2 days and still cannot find him...:(

Some updates to get this thread going again...picked up some more frags/corals from local reefers and couldnt be more happy! I believe I am going to slow down on the coral buying and let it all settle in and grow.

Got a super deal for 3 baby jawbreakers that I placed in a acrylic box with crush coral and now 1 is missing. I believe it may have detached and blown away somewhere in the tank...hopefully it attached to the rockwork somewhere...*Crossing fingers

Also got several zoa frags and some pocillopora mini colonies along with a colony of miami hurricane chalice from a local reefer who is going off to college. Enjoy the pics.

UPDATE: went home today for lunch and found the missing jawbeaker when my lights turned on! It was in the very back corner of the tank chilling with all the detritus. Scooped it up and put it back in the mushroom box. Now hope it attaches to a rock!

You liking the hydra 26? Looking at getting one for my 60 but was worried it wouldnt be enough. You dont seem to have problems growing anything

I really have no issues with it as my softies are growing no problem. I am not too sure about SPS though...I plan to down the line add another one to get better spread

honestly think you'll be just fine. My 26HD is only running at 70%
Awesome! That’s good to hear. I figure in maybe a year I’ll upgrade to something like the 64HD or something but I’d like to just use what I have to get things kicked off and growing.
