I kept a Berlin style reef back in the early 1990's in college with a WetDry filter, Turboflotor protein skimmer and live wet rock I order from an ad in a magazine, shipped from Fiji. And yes, I had a $20 Yellow Tang. After moving away after college, I stuck with freshwater planted tanks. Got into aquascaping, and even entered a few competitions at local expos.

Started this 60g cube four months ago and enjoying learning all the ways the hobby has changed over the past decades. Pleased to find that a lot of aquacultured animals are available now!

Low Budget Setup:
  • Aqueon 60g Cube
  • Eheim Canister filter with MarinePure media
  • MagTool DC Gyre MT-2400 WaveMaker
  • Amazon Black Box 165w light (Wills)
  • HOB Chaeto Refugium
  • MarcoRocks dry rock
  • CaribSea Special Grade sand
First corals just went in last week, with a Green Sinularia, mushroom, and a few Zoa's.

Fish consist of a Molly used to cycle the tank, followed by a Clown and a Green Chromis. 20240804_173248.jpg 20240820_213946.jpg 20240820_214002.jpg

That bleached branch coral brings back a lot of memories :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

The tank looks nice.
Definitely very old school! But I actually have a weird idea I want to try with it - I am getting a large mat of GSP that I'm going to cut in strips and glue to it and try to see how it looks encrusted with the green polyps.

Almost six months in, got the GSP encrusting the bleached staghorn skeleton, added a Kenya Tree, dragons Breath macro, and a pair of fire gobies.
Also swapped out the little HOB Refugium for an Aquamaxx HF-M. Skimmer is doing nicely and now there's a lot more room for macro in the Refugium chamber.
Think I see the first tiny specs of Coraline maybe!
