Vintage , sorry to see that with the torch. It looks like it was a pretty nice one before it got jellied. I had a near total wipeout of my existant torches in mid spring. Lost 10 out of 12 torches. Finally back up to 11.
Beautiful tank as always.

I remember that! And never figured out the cause right?

Sorry about the torch! That's brutal. Just did a hack job on my torch that jellied--hammer decided it no longer liked the torch and sent its sweepers after it. Lost 3 heads, salvaged 2.5 and hoping they recover.

The jelly is brutal and so difficult to recover from. I went from beautiful torch to no torch in 48 hours, and that was with intervention steps trying to save it

I wish you the best !

Shocked! I banned two coral nipping sexy shrimp from my pico months ago to this tanks sump, never saw them again until today! Both alive and well and in my return compartment

Also this Goni has never extended for me. Ever. Not since I got it a few months ago and then I walk by last night and see this!

Should have moved the flipper cleaner. Amateur move leaving it on the front for photo time lol
Same with daytime pics which get reflections - but the fish were out and being photogenic and at night they aren’t as active. Maybe I should get curtains for the patio door

Man sorry to see that happen to that torch….My frogspawn reached out a couple days ago and took out two of my recent gonis from sbb: dragon lashes and mystic something. Since i turned the nano into a QT for fish temporarily gonna use it as a opportunity to run the display fallow for alittle bit

Noooo not the dragon lashes!!

Can’t trust frogspawn or hammers. They can extend sweepers and keep them hidden most the time. That gold hammer on the top right of my tank…he’s taken out a few corals because I foolishly trusted it based on day and nighttime appearance. Overnight it was extending sweepers. Had to relocate it to the current location…high and away from anything else

Ive increased my parameters over the last 3 months

Phosphate - .38ish
Nitrate 6.5
Alk - ran in the 8’s for a while, and now am steady at 8.75 with an alk controller
Will be increasing to 9 soon just don’t want to make too many changes too fast
Lovely tank! I would like your opinion on using the santa monica scrubber. I am running a newer 10 gallon reef tank. The phosphate is up high at 0.5 and NO3 at 7. What prompted you to bump up your phosphate back up from <0.1 to 0.38?

What is your pH level? wondering if the algae scrubber helps keep the pH up?

Thanks!

Ummm I used new foods that I was unfamiliar with for a week and casually checked phosphate and was shocked to see a .98 reading instead of .05ish. I did multiple tests over multiple days to be sure.

I did want my phosphate higher but this was ridiculous. I cut out one food and started using the other more sparingly.

In 3 days I lowered to .5 and then spent the next few weeks attempting to reduce further and learn a balance with feeding.

as of yesterday my phosphate is .2

My goal will be to end up in the .1 to .2 range, so I’m close.

I also wanted to increase alkalinity to promote coral skeletal growth and high alk doesn’t work well with near zero nutrients. Soo that was a motivating factor as well

My alk is now auto controlled by a kh guardian - it tests every 4 hours and doses as needed to maintain my setpoint - 9.25 dkh. It has accuracy of + - .1 dkh

(For those interested, this is a $1200 device that’s being sold direct from the company for $400. It’s a steal at this price)

It also monitors temp, salinity, and ph (optional 50$ Expansion module)

My ph is on the left, dkh on the right
This is indoors with doors and windows shut all day and night

Standby 64 means 64 min to the next alkalinity test. Ph is read every 30 seconds

Thank you for quick reply! What is your typical pH through out the day? Is your pH higher due to your higher alk levels or do you feel it is from the scrubber?

The lowest I’ve seen it is 7.8 and highest is 8. I never really paid attention to ph before. A few weeks ago I would be able to tell you what my tanks ph was…in 20+ years I never paid any attention to ph or measured it. Scrubbers do help stabilize ph because at night (and day also) they grow algae which is supposed to raise ph.

I think most peoples ph drops at night and scrubbers do help eliminate that drop. Mine runs 18 hours a day so it does overlap into day hours

I am trying to grow more hammers and gonis as well but not seeing growth due to either low pH or too high phosphates. I assume you were getting decent growth from your torches using the scrubber? How long does it usually take for your torches to usually grow a new head prior to bumping up your alk ?

Thanks!

The banana grail has not behaved like other torches and is a massive head pinching and almost splitting into 8 heads. While pinching it doesn’t extend fully it’s a on / off phase it goes through
