That button does not get hit often unfortunately. Nor do folks buy boxes under the "I don't care about names option"
Its great getting your perspective on the other side of the isle about the name game, I would be interested to hear how many people go hit the non glitz button now that you pointed it out lol

I'm glad this is not important to you, but the names are more important to others than I think you realize.
I realize. I just don’t care. Your entire response is predicated in the name meaning something to me.

One very useful part is that you can look up the name to get a sense of the going price point
Means absolutely nothing to me. I buy based on appearance and species. The price is either acceptable or not based on what I see, not its trade name or how rare or not it is.

, as you know a good price when it presents itself
But I am not comparing it to anything else. It is a good price if it is a price that I am willing to pay for what I see.

, in some instances it does tell you where that coral came from (some would ideally be all, but we've already established that's not the case). You can then use this info to map back to a species name when you are strugglinging to identify what a particular coral is.
I don’t care where it came from, at all.

But your point is absolutely heard, and I appreciate the fact that you sincerely just buy corals that you like.
Bingo

I guess I'm interested... In your opinion, what would you want to see on a vendor website? What do you prefer for item names? What method would you use for pricing a coral?
Don’t care what is written there. Just a realistic photo and if cultured or grown out what type of light or otherwise if it just came fresh and was hacked, mounted and shipped. And price and shipping cost. I decide based on what I see and the price.

Thanks for the kind words. So, it's been implemented for about 3 years now I think and so far I've only had a few people actually comment that they preferred it.

I had a few threads when I initially set it up asking for feed back and such. I even had a game with prizes when I was trying to get as many pieces identified positively as possible. lol. It fizzled out pretty quick.

The consensus was that it was cool, and a worthy effort, still kind of gimmicky though and while I was ultimately pandering to a small minority of semi angry/semi serious purists, most people preferred to browse with names attached.

I will say though, the people that did like it found it very refreshing and praised it highly. For what it's worth.

I should ask my developer if we can log how many people actually shop in no glitz mode though. In fact, I think may have when we set it up. I'll find out and report back.

I like the no glitz, especially if it has the species name listed. All acros aren’t the same in care requirements, and it helps knowing what we are looking at.

I love it! So, not exactly a nihilist by definition, Can we say you are a "coralist"?

There are things that I do find value in and things that I collect where provenance, rarity, market value, do matter. (American Flyer trains for example). One could even argue that this is silly, and may be in their perspective.

My issue with the coral is that it is all just made up nonsense, including the rarity in most cases and the fact that they look different depending on where they are kept.

These are living things that can be propagated, not limited edition serialized items that grow in value over time or become scarce due to degradation, wear or mishandling.

I don't blame you as a vendor for participating in this absolute nonsense, it is the system for which you have to work in. It was maybe Steve Tyree and then Jason Fox who started this nonsense... so the horse left the barn and and of course the next guy has to kick it up a notch and then the next guy, etc. and here we are.

As absolutely dumb as I think the whole thing is, there is no use being angry about it, so I just choose to ignore it. You can sell me a coral and call it anything you want. I won't remember anway.

Even experts often get coral species wrong. As to marketing names applied in top of that based on color morphs ? Seems way too wiggly to be reliable.

I really can’t see buying an expensive creature without seeing it first in a wysiwyg photo under stated lighting conditions.
