Long time, no update. Busy week at work. Rain on top of rain with a side of rain. In case you didn't know, coal doesnt like to burn when its wet, and it stops up in the chutes between the belts that bring it over to the plant.

So anyway, the tank is doing fine. Acros look good with the exception of a little tissue loss on the ASL Baskin Robbins. Go figure my most expensive one. It looks to just be a little at the base, most likely from being ripped off the rocks and reglued to a plug to facilitate easier dipping.

Magnesium has been difficult to raise. I've dosed a lot of the BRS magnesium supplement and last test I had 1280ppm, up only 80ppm from the time before that. It did say I would need over 900ml to get it to 1400 where I would like. I can't remember exactly how much I've dosed. Work distracted me too much.

I'm going to do a full run of tests tomorrow to check on everything and I have a few more corals that need frag plugs. Went and helped dip acros and rescaped my friends tank a bit since we pulled them all off the rocks. Still had to work around encrusted montis, so that was fun. I took a few clippings of this and that when the frag plugs ran out. I'll glue them to plugs I have tomorrow and add them to my dip. Once I'm done with dipping and confident I'm AEFW free, I'll put them up for sale on Facebook or something.

I'll leave you with a distorted angled picture of some JF Stargazers gone wild.

Test results update...

Ca 350ppm (Down 100ppm in 12 days.)
Alk 8.5dKH (Down 0.7dKH in 8 days.)
Mg out of reageant, oops
PO4 0.26ppm (Down 0.38ppm in 12 days, likely a spike from killing the cyano last time. Chaeto is growing like crazy.)
Salinity 1.026SG

I went ahead and dosed Ca back up. It took 500ml to raise my tank from 350 to 400ppm. I dosed 300ml at first, waited a few hours and tested 380ppm, an increase of 30ppm. Dosed 200ml a second time, waited a hour or two and tested 400ppm, an increase of 20ppm. So for my tank, 500ml per 50ppm or 10 ml per 1ppm. I have 100 gallons of water almost exactly according to the BRS calculator. I'll dose another 250ml before work to get it up to 425ppm where my goal is. I did test alk again after dosing the BRS Calcium Chloride because I remember reading dosing one can lower the other. Still 8.5dKH.

Figuring out calcium consumption should be easy. I dropped 100ppm in 12 days, that would be approximately 8ppm a day or 80ml of liquid calcium chloride.

Alk consumption was 0.7 dKH over 8 days or .08dKH a day. Using the 100g on the calculator, it tells me to dose 5ml a day of liquid soda ash. I wonder why the alk dose is so much less than my calcium dose? Perhaps once I get calcium stable, alk consumption will increase.

For now my doser is set up to dose 13ml of calcium chloride 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000 and 2200. Soda ash is 30 minutes behind at 1ml. I'll monitor closely and adjust as needed until the tank is dialed in. With all the frags I've added recently, I'm expecting to adjust a bunch.

Just remembered to check my ATI results... Seems a have a little bit of tin, manganese is a tad low and iodine is low. Otherwise everything is pretty spot on except for high phosphates, that I know about. I may order some of the ATI iodine and manganese suppliments. I don't need much tho, 0.12ml for 2 days and 0.19ml 1 day respectively.

Something doesn't make sense about that calcium consumption but it has to be nice to see no contamination issues with the ATI sample!

Yea, just seems odd to me to need 10x the calcium as alk. Any chance dosing magnesium could cause calcium to precipitate?

Not really. Precipitation is normally a problem when magnesium is low. When you add magnesium it would be harder for precipitates to form if I remember my chemistry correctly.

Finally got around to doing something with that rock in the middle of the tank. I didnt like the way that one rock was sitting and couldn't figure out how to put it in a better position whole... so, we broke it.

This is the rock I'm talking about.

It just kinda leaned up against the arch and was blocking a good spot where I wanted to put a coral. Also, I could not get a good picture of the Stargazers at the angle they were at. So, here's what it looks like now.

I broke a piece off, turned it around slightly and moved it into a little hole where it fit pretty well. Look just left of the hollywood stunner chalice and right of where the damsel is. That little "y" there is the left over of the rock. The other piece went down lower on the sand for another piece of LPS in the future.

The best part is this...

Ok, they are still mad at me... but I can get a clear picture if one of my favorite zoas now!

Looks GREAT Robin ! ! !

I don't know if I said this to you but be careful with that clip. The internal magnet in mine rusted.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep am eye on it. I had to ditch my IM frozen food thawer thingy... "Gourmet Defroster" I think. The inside magnet swelled like countless others I've seen on here. It held more frozen food than it allowed into the tank for the fish to eat anyway.

This TLF veggie clip is the newer one that is supposed to be better sealed than the old one. Anything man made can fail, especially in salt water. Even me. I'm getting older daily, and feel every second. :)
