Hey, does anyone have any thoughts or feedback on this wrasse stocking list for my red sea g2 750 (roughly 180g DT) fowlr:
Spanish hogfish (about 12cm)
Harlequin tusk
Lennardi wrasse
China pearl / new guinea wrasse
Some Halichoeres, male Melanurus, probably an earmuff and probably a timor wrasse
Pseudojuloides severnsi
And would a bird wrasse work or too aggressive?
Some other fish would be a couple of tangs, couple of angels and butterflies and some miscellaneous australian native fish like:
Purple whiptail
Sailfin catfish
Australian herring, blotched anthias etc

Get too big and too aggressive for some of you other fish I’d suggest
Harlequin tusk
Could work though they can be shy and might not get on with a hogfish
Lennardi wrasse
Very sensitive and difficult and could easily be bullied
China pearl / new guinea wrasse
Like above but easier
Some Halichoeres, male Melanurus, probably an earmuff and probably a timor wrasse
If you want the Anampses I suggest more peaceful species then the melanurus and Timor. Radiant, Babi, one of the yellows.
Pseudojuloides severnsi
Same as the tamarins/anampses
And would a bird wrasse work or too aggressive?
Mine is yet to be aggressive but it is a risk
Some other fish would be a couple of tangs, couple of angels and butterflies and some miscellaneous australian native fish like:
Purple whiptail
Sailfin catfish
Australian herring, blotched anthias etc
Some of the more aggressive species of tang and angels could cause issues with some of the wrasse. Especially the pencil.

My suggestion is you pick an aggression level and then stock either semi aggressive or peaceful then stock from there

Severnsi Pencil wrasse is in house, acclimated, and currently sleeping in the sand. Hoping he comes out tonight or tomorrow! Sadly the leopard didn't survive shipping.

Took him a few days, but he popped his head out and joined the group today!

Straight away I’d forget the Anampses lennardi and Pseudojuloides, they will be outcompeted in that tank. Also, Lennardi requires cooler temperatures (75°F maximum long term).

Other than that, I agree with what Slocke has said :)

Thanks for the feedback. For tangs i was thinking probably a bristletooth, smallish naso, lavender and a purple if that makes a difference. So lennardi need cooler temperatures. I live in a very cold area and even with 2 300w heaters i reckon my tank would be dropping to 20-22c in the evening at night and would rarely get to what the heaters are set to (25c). Also the lennardi i'm looking at getting is a full grown adult around 20-25cm so it would be the biggest fish in the tank, not sure if that could help with getting 'outcompeted'

As for Slcoke's suggestion about melanurus and timor being too aggressive for this tank. Unfortunately in australia our options are really limited, despite we being able to legally import any species of wrasse it just doesn't happen frequently and i've never seen a Halichoeres iridis or babi wrasse for sale here. We do get checkerboards, neons and yellow coris if those are any better but i can't say i'm a fan of the way yellow coris look.

I would say having a big lennardi changes things and you could get the melanurus or Timor though I would just pick one of the two.

Yellow (not actually coris) wrasse are far more peaceful but I agree that they aren’t my style either

I should also add that fish are going to be added to the tank in roughly this order:
This week, tank fill, later this week fish-in cycle with 12cm juvenile spanish flag snapper
next week, spanish hogfish, probably tuskfish and possibly the lennardi, whiptail, catfish.
Stuff like angels and tangs maybe week 3-4. The herring is a local fish so whenever i catch one on rod and reel.
I could then add the melanurus/whatever halichoeres whenever as they're regularly available here. Bird wrasse and new guinea wrasse are very rare here so that would probably be a few months at least.
Another question, would the royal pencil being added before things like the Halichoeres help?

I really don’t see a pencil wrasse or the New Guinea wrasse doing well in a tank like that. Too shy and too sensitive

My favorite pencil, and I love Ticonderoga #2.
Bahahahaha, I was trying to find Pseudojuloides ticonderoga in Google Images, until I remembered "hey, didn't I just buy 3 packs of Ticonderogas for kids' school supplies?".

I know it’s not Severnsi but man this Pseudojuloides edwardi has had some colour change since I got him. Just to hope I have my female transition and get the Labyrinthus colouration!

And how are Thalassoma wrasses? I know lunar wrasses can be demons. I can get T.hardwicke and T.quinquevittatum in australia as well. How are their aggresion levels compared to the other wrasses i'm planning like a hogfish, bird, coris, etc?

The smaller the more peaceful. So those two should be better then a lunare

Any of you had a tusk and have it do well with the typical wrasses and corals that we keep here in this thread? There’s a tusk at the lfs. His eye language says “don’t do it “
They are great reef rush. They eat smaller fish not corals. They are very lazy and rather let you feed them rather than hunt for food. Keep them well fed and your fish and shrimp will be fine.
Show stopper for sure.

I never had a problem with tusks messing with any corals. The tusk I had was a bully and had to be with other aggressive fish. But it’s been a long time since I’ve had one, and I’ve heard they might be more/less aggressive depending on where they were collected.

Maybe the new captive bred ones are nice guys?
