That's a real PITA when something you expect to be a non-issue, like salt mix, turns out to cause a huge issue and even livestock losses. Hasn't happened to me yet with Fritz blue box, but I had 2 batches of HW that had numbers all over the board and was a mess to dial in.

That's why I switched from Tropic Marin, and I've used them since I got into the hobby. Smdh. Looks like I'll be switching to RSCP

i used RSCP before HW and switched, but more because of mixing than because of parameters. Switched from HW purely because of parameters. Think it boils down to running a couple of tests on any new batch of salt just to check for irregularities.

Length of time and precipitate, specifically brown stuff. HW and Fritz still give me some white precipitate, so maybe that's not such a big deal. But I was throwing out about a quarter to half gallon because it had so much junk floating about at the bottom of my 5gal carboys. Again, not such an issue if you're making larger volumes.

Hrmm... I mix 55 gal batches in large tanks. Usually the brown residue (like you see with reef crystals) is from an anticaking agent. It would be impossible to clean out the residue from my tanks...

I've never seen any of the residue actually in the tanks, just in the buckets. There are a number of threads on R2R about how well different salts mix. Many of them cite Reef Crystals taking forever/residue, RSCP residue, TM Pro residue from the Turkey lots, etc. HW and Fritz get good comments about mixing fast and clean. But even Randy Holmes-Farley, if I remember correctly, replied that the residues in the buckets are likely nothing to worry about.

I posted a thread about mixing precipitate once upon a time, Randy agreed no issue - I typically mix on-the-spot for WC but had some caking when I was mixing RSCP for a big batch during one of the moves, for related science, no one was flustered, this is all i know..

Salt Precipitate - Go/No Go?!

I've been mixing SW in a 32 gal brute for a few weeks while moving our tank, getting ready to re-add all livestock and rock from temporary (6 day) tote-life. At any rate my mixing pump had shut down for a period of somewhere under a week, when I found it there was a good amount of precipitate...
