Pretty sure that was how I lost my Yellow-Lined Cleaner Goby - Foxface got startled and Yellow-Lined looked really rough.

Sorry about the Aiptasia. That's the way my 125 went. I still see Nudibranches in there on several occasions but they don't seem to be making a huge dent.
Do remember where you got your Yellow-Lined Cleaner Goby? I've only seen them once and I'm pretty sure it was at Ocean Floor.

That's pretty discouraging about the nudis. I'll probably try again though.

So I'm disgusted with my current reef-keeping regimen. My parameters are way off. I don't chase numbers so my targets are soft targets. I know my tank runs well with those parameters and they aren't 'on-the-edge' or hard to maintain--if I don't totally slack off.

Temp: 79.8F (target 78-79F I can't bring this back down without lowering the house temp or removing the fuge)
pH: 7.8 (target 8.2-8.6 although realistically it is usually around 8.1)
Alk: 7.0 (target 8.0-9.0)
Ca: 365 (target 400-440)
NO3: 40 (target 10-20)
PO4: .21 (target .05-.1)
Mg: 750 (target 1280-1500)

I couldn't do any tank testing the last three weeks so I cut my daily 2-part dosing in half and eliminated my weekly Mg dose to make sure I didn't overdose. Big mistake. The Alk and Mg numbers explain why I'll probably lose 75-80% of my montis. The birds nest are gone but I stuck two of the skeletons in the frag tank just in case. Everything else looks sad but viable. The aptasia are thriving.

I gave a 25% larger than normal dose of 2-part to start to kick things back up. I also dosed enough Mg to bring it up to about 800-850. I added a bag of ChemiPure Blue to the overflow to help reduce the PO4 slowly.

I also tossed out some Rod's Food that smelled off to me, just in case.

Today I'll just do a normal 2-part dose and a little cleanup. Tomorrow I'll do a very small water change, around 5%, as I want to make the return to normal gradual, and my normal 2-part dose. Sunday I'll recheck the parameters and decide where I'm at. I figure I will need to do another oversize 2-part and Mg dose then but we'll see.

I got mine at Petco believe it or not. A couple of the west side Petcos have decent saltwater tanks.

I'm usually able to maintain temps with just surface agitation but it keeps my pH low as well. It's hard to do the CO2 scrubbers here with the high temps outside I guess but that's always an option?

Interesting. I've never bought a fish at a Petco. I believe the one in South Chandler has a SW section. I'll check it out.

Fans are an option. I have really good surface agitation as it is from the two gyres but fans used to enable me to use a 250MH over a 40B at kinda acceptable levels. Good idea, I may end up going that route. Thanks.

Yah, I don't think that aerating the tank with 110 degree, sand-laden air is much of a win situation.

I didn’t have any luck with the Nudi’s either. What you should do is take a very small rock with aiptasia on it to your lfs, have them put it in a tank with peppermint shrimp and watch what happens. If they swarm it then there’s your solution. That’s basically what I did and just one peppermint shrimp cleared up my entire aiptasia problem. It wasn’t the biggest outbreak but they were all gone in 24 hours. You just need to hire the right shrimp for the job. The key is to see them in action so you know you’re not getting a dud.

I have a couple of Petco fish. Blue damsel and a neon dottyback. My local Petco recently hired someone to manage the fish section that at least has a clue about keeping it clean plus they overhauled it and put each bank of tanks on its own sump instead of everything all being tied together. I’m not making it a habit of buying from there but it’s better than your run of the mill Petco.

Unfortunately he's not super close to any LFS. @tharbin I've had good luck with both Reef Cleaners and Ocean Floor Peps though.

Did you have any trouble with the Peppermint and your corals? I always avoided shrimp other than cleaners. I only know of one LFS on my side of the valley that carries Peppermints with any regularity.

I'm actually about due for a CuC refresh so Reef Cleaners may be a good idea. I buy from them about once a year but never the stuff that requires UPS. I don't think they will ship here right now though because of our daytime temps. I remember that I have to basically order between October and May from them. I don't remember seeing any at Ocean Floor when I was there last month but Aquarium Arts had a couple dozen a few weeks ago.

Good idea on the bring a rock. Think they'd get suspicious if I showed up with a hundred pounds or so of rock?

No trouble, but it’s just the one shrimp right now. Once the aiptasia are gone or at least under enough control that you don’t see them anymore just keep the tank well fed and you should be good. You just have to make sure you’re getting ones that eat aiptasia and the best way to do that is by seeing it firsthand. If the lfs doesn’t usually stock them I’d ask them to order some in so you can see them in action.

No, not suspicious at all. Everybody does that. Completely normal. You should do it tomorrow, lol.
You should have seen me recently though, rolling into the lfs with a couple of buckets full of rocks and 15 fairly good sized rbta’s.

The good news there would be if I got to the point where I couldn't find aiptasia for them to eat.

I could easily rehome it if it becomes a problem. I have a very small LFS about 3 miles from home and I try to support him any way I can but he isn't in a position to bring in marine livestock. He wants to be a sw dealer but there just isn't enough local business to support him. He's plucky though. He gets by selling live foods for reptiles, hot wheels, collectables, 3d-printed trinkets, small reptile/fish tanks and a half way decent collection of freshwater fish/plants. He has a few small sw tanks, two are displays that are perpetually for sale, he has six 10 gallon or so tanks for inverts/fish that are rarely stocked with anything and one 75 gallon or so tank for frags and miscellaneous sw stuff but all in pretty sad shape except the display tanks. I try to get a fair amount of my hard goods through him to give him a little business. I'm sure he'd love a free Peppermint Shrimp if the need arose.

My buddy just had a delivery last week.

Their peppermints are good. Mine ate Aiptasia and left Coral alone.

Thanks I may give them a try today. They also have Randall's Pistol Shrimp, my favorite partner shrimp, but they need to be shipped UPS. Their price is a little high but not insane. Too bad my Black Ray wasn't fast enough to avoid the Foxface. I wanted to get a Randall's at the same time I bought the Black Ray but the LFS wanted an insane price for it.

There is a risk with peppermints but to be honest, you gotta get that problem under control or it will sap your motivation. You can always get a new coral or two if the shrimp go rogue and they are easy to catch with bottle trap.

Just placed a small order with Reef Cleaners including 2 Peppermints.
When you get the peppermints try putting them in a bucket with a rock that has aiptasia. That way you can monitor them easier and make sure they are going to do the job.

I just got two peppermint’s for my 10 gal and they are doing good work on the aiptasia. It’s been about two weeks and noticed at least 4 are gone. I had about 12 I can see. I have sexy shrimp in the same tank.
