TANK TALK: Manual feeding is an important activity by which to observe and evaluate all the animals in your care. Tell us about your feeding routine. Did you know the Plank mixing chamber is a convenient means to manually feed frozen food? What are your thoughts or questions concerning the balance between manual and automatic feeding?

I use automatic feeders for flake 3x per day, then I feed a 1/4 sheet of nori a day in my 70g

i feed manually everyday @ 7:30 am (occasionally again in evenings with nori). This way I don't forget, the fish know its time- they are waiting for me at the top, and therefore less waste of food. Side note not always getting alerts e-mail or in R2R for daily questions some days I do some I don't

I have excellent luck with gorg's. everyone says they are hard. I've had a blueberry one that started out about the size of 2 fingers and is now about the size of my hand I have an orange gorg too that I recently got thats doing fine. Sun coral I had one for 2 years and it was fine then it died i have another one about 8 months now doing fine. My clowns host anything shrooms, duncan, lt plate coral, welso, goni they also "kiss" occasionally during the day (she also gets pi**y with him often) and sleep nose to nose lol I same into room last night I heard lots of splashing and thought someone jumped and didn't see them @ first and freaked found them at top between output nozzle and wavemaker asleep. they used to sleep in the goni but they beat that poor goni up so now they sleep by the wavemaker and output from pump and hang out by whats left of their goni and the lt plate coral in day. as she gets older she is getting meaner though she bites now when i clean which she never did for 2 years until recently she also is not being nice to others now.

TANK TALK: This hobby is hard sometimes. If you could boil it down to 1-2 sentences, why do you Reef? What keeps you in the hobby for years on end?
I started about 26 years ago had a huge tomato clown for like 4 years who hated EVERYONE but 1 specific yellow tang- E V E R Y O N E- even any other yellow tangs! When I moved, both passed a week or so after, my friends were like..we're seriously moving 55 gallons of water- I said yes , yes we are in 11 5 gallon buckets. After they passed I stopped for almost 22 years, just had an empty tank in the room with rocks and nothing else lol. When I remodeled, I said OK either I start again or i sell the tank. Started again in 2021 this time with fish and coral. Its calming to have a tank- expensive though

TANK TALK: Tell us about your reef setup's evolution. What gear did you start out with? What does it look like now? What led to the changes?
old school 55gal hex start out with included flourescent, under gravel filter and black aquarium gravel, 2 stacks with air stones, and old dead large corals lol. Then took out under gravel filter & stacks/air stones went to OTB penguin 60gal filter. now fluvial 70 gal canister, wavemaker, sand, purple live rock (which i regret getting purple now instead of white) left the huge old dead blue pipe organ coral in, got an LED light now.......before the tank police come....yes the coral beauty's tail is messed up..its because he's a dumbs*it and starts up with the female clown. he gets his tail all beat up then chills out for awhile until its healed then he starts again - i've watched him do it. It's been like this back and forth for ~ 9 months now he doesn't get sick, tail always grows back, still eats and always heals so i stopped worrying., the smudges on glass is not algae its the snail goo from eating the very little algae i sometimes get..it will be cleaned when do my monthly top off for evaporation Friday. The plate coral is pastel yellow with pastel blue tips he's not bleaching he's always been that way. The finger leather is a little lighter than normal I link that to the brighter light i have been trying i'm dialing it back to where it used to be.

My six-line wrasse after adding my biota yellow tangs. Have been living together for a few months now with no issues. They were a lot smaller back then also.

I feed 3 times a day randomly. Seeing a post on the gram, you can have the plank pump powered by GHl switched outlet separately from the barrel outlet. Which will allow you to add any type of food or manually dose anything while the pump stays running. Great idea also to manually feed TDO pellets in between feeds.

I haven't experienced years...YET! I have no plans on getting out for as long as my health will allow it. I have always wanted to have a reef tank. I was afraid because of my ignorance and overall fear. The intriguing life forms that we get to enjoy in the comfort of our homes, is simply amazing!

My first and currently only marine fish are a clown fish and some damsels. I understand that a clown is a type of damsel, but I have 3 damsels (1 Yellow tail and 2 Azure) and a single Occularis clown. They all get along fine. A few little disagreements here and there, but generally speaking, there is no fighting!

Here is a picture of me trying to introduce 2 other clowns with mine. About 5 minutes later, they were ready to fight to the death. They were separated and rehomed. The damsels have been angels even though I have been told time and time again that they will be little devils.

Currently, I am only feeding 3 marine fish. I have giving them a small amount of pellets every morning and evening. I have about 4 or 5 different dry pellets to give them variety. I give them treats of frozen foods only a couple times a week and a small amount.

Knowing that my schedule can be chaotic at times, I know I need to find a better solution for feeding. I would prefer to feed a few more times per day. My solution would 100% have to be an autofeeder. My concern is absolutely not having my settings correct for the right size food and causing major nutrient issues. Equipment malfunctions and how would I know that after I set it up and everything was correct, that it stays consistent and won't overfeed. That is a worry for sure!

I enjoy daily manual feedings and taking the time to chat with them. There have been occasions where an auto feeder was needed, but each one I have tried didn’t work well at all. I gave up. I’m a new reefer and that money spent on crappy auto feeders could have went to other equipment. I have read about the Plank feeder and I’m interested. Having a quality feeder would be really handy for vacations and the couple days a week I go into the office (mainly work from home). Merry Christmas and blessings to all this holiday season.

TANK TALK: If there was one thing/product you wish existed in the hobby but doesn't right now, what would it be and why?
A cure for fish diseases that didn't kill everything else in the tank!

Too many products have to be dosed in a QT tank which means removing all the potentially affected fish. That's stressful on the fish and can cause harm in and of itself. I'd much rather do "Home Care" style treatment but don't want all of my corals and inverts to be harmed in the process.
