TANK TALK: This hobby is hard sometimes. If you could boil it down to 1-2 sentences, why do you Reef? What keeps you in the hobby for years on end?
I love the sound of water, and growing plant/corals. Unique ecosystem that i could never observe otherwise.

Hope I’m allowed to enter as located in the uk?
Not sure about this one but usually the giveaways are free shipping to the US (maybe continental US?) and outside that winner pays shipping I believe.

I read the other posts and realize I must be an utter failure. My reef has not evolved. Three yrs ago, I bought an Aqueon 120g tank. I built a stand. I won a Noophysce light, so I bought a second. I bought a blemished sump and skimmer. I am using all the same hardware now. My corals are growing and I have trades some frags.

The first change will be better lights - probably add to the existing.
Or an utter success! Started the right way and kept going?

I have always loved what lived in the ocean. The tech and ability to have a small slice of the great barrier reef, fiji, indonesia etc in the middle of my living room in the middle of Indiana is just cool. Regardless of how good or bad its going.

This hobby gives me an escape from reality and gives me something to look forward to when I get off. We just started but I am soooo looking forward to seeing my corals grow and what I can create!

TANK TALK: Tell us about your reef setup's evolution. What gear did you start out with? What does it look like now? What led to the changes?
Started with an air driven corner floss filter in a metal rimmed 15 gallon tank (late 60s). Now it's a 250 gallon system. Changes driven by hobby evolution.

Always wanted to be able to keep what I saw in the ocean everyday in my home. It's in my salty blood.

The fish bring me peace in the long cold months in Wyoming. The coral bring fulfillment.

TANK TALK: Manual feeding is an important activity by which to observe and evaluate all the animals in your care. Tell us about your feeding routine. Did you know the Plank mixing chamber is a convenient means to manually feed frozen food? What are your thoughts or questions concerning the balance between manual and automatic feeding?

I have never used an automatic feeder, however, I am open to using one, as for manual feeding, I only feed frozen PE Mysis, with garlic extract added in, and a small piece of nori for my algae eaters. I firmly believe that manual feeding is required so that you can observe your fish for potential health issues. My feeding routine consists of getting home, dosing phyto, and ESV B-Ionic 2 part, then feeding my fish after dosing. I feed again at around 8:00pm, however if I win the Plank, I will only feed frozen once a day at around 6:00pm, and have the plank automate to feeding at 3:00pm and then 9:00pm.

I love feeding my fish manually! I work long hours so my boyfriend feeds the fish when I can’t. I’m always asking him if he fed them yet because I look forward to it when I get home. I just love how lively it makes the tank look when they’re all swimming around for food and I get to observe them during the feeding. Usually we feed 2x day, how ever much they can eat in like 2-3 min. If I notice they’re hungry between feedings I’ll put a small pinch of flakes (my chromis and gobies love it, cardinal not so much). We feed frozen brine shrimp and want to try mysis and some algae. We also dose phyto/copepods for our bar goby- he goes crazy for that. They don’t seem to like the seaweed/nori clips…my neon goby kinda does, he “surfs” it. I would like to try an automatic feeder just for those days when I’m not home or we have a trip planned. The only thing I’m worried about is not being able to watch them eat an over feeding. I’m sure it’ll take some tinkering to get the right amount out.

At about 5x feedings per day, I rely on automatic feeding but on most days incorporate one or more manual feedings. This may be two doses of hatched baby brine shrimp, or target feeding the corals + firefish + yasha goby (they don't get as much automatic food). I think the manual feeding helps establish a type of relationship with the fish--they know you bring food and get excited when you start mixing up their manual dose.

Typical routine Mon through Fri:
7am - liquid autofeed
10am - liquid autofeed + eheim TDO
*10am-12pm - manual feed baby brine
1pm - liquid autofeed+ eheim TDO
*2pm-4pm - manual feed baby brine
4pm - liquid autofeed + eheim TDO
*5-6pm - manual target feed corals and fish with mysis feast/TDO medium/krill(for nems)/other stuff

*Random feedings through the day: freeze dried calanus + mysis

I enjoy feeding my fish manually, though it can be a pain to stay on a consistent schedule because of many factors. I routinely feed frozen food, with some pellets mixed in to vary the diets of my fish. I always put a fresh sheet of nori for my omnivores to enjoy on a daily. I always heard the plank could feed frozen food, which I think is amazing! How long can frozen food be inside of the plank feeder? Does it keep things cold so it doesn't spoil?

I’m gone from 6am to around 4pm, so I’m only able to feed once a day. I would love to up it and having an auto feeder would help with that. I feel I could not only house slightly more needy species, but it would be better for the current fish as well. My only concern is over feeding, or offering more food than they’re used to, causing uneaten food going into the system.
