My tank has alot of DIY. I am retired so I need to watch the budget.
My stand is DIY (still needs painted). My tank top is DIY using BRS / hardware store / 3D parts.
My tank monitor/doser is built from an Arduino (2) that email me alarms, and dose my 2-part elements.

The most valuable advice I got? I would say is to have patience. Every stage I have encountered I hear the word patience. From researching, planning, cycling, equipment, etc. I believe that to be true. There is no rush in this hobby.

Don't remember who, but whoever led me to using ocean live rock. Ocean live rock has made all the difference in my reefing experience.
Same here. I was planning on just doing dry rock. But after enough reading on the forums I ended up getting some TB live rock rubble.

Seems to have worked bc I didn’t really go through much of an ugly phase. Just dealing with some minor GHA.

I haven't done it yet but once I get the tank and stand delivered, I plan on doing a light fixture mount with a canopy over it. When that time comes, I'll be sure to have a build thread and post pics.

Two different reefers told two different things. One was to put my tank in the wall it made things easier for me by keeping the sump more open and not take away space in the room. Two, to get an apex it has made reefing easier. Any controller would work as well too. Coupling the controller with some cheap Amazon webcams has made a huge difference in maintaining the tank.

Not everything lives. Dont go chasing a bunch of parameters for 1 thing while making everything else mad.

Tried niulding my own frag racks. Made one set out of extra plexiglass from work along with some out of shelf rock. Both sets I glued magnets too. I made sure to use reef safe glue, but the magnets where not. They were supposed to be but that was a lie. They leached rust into the tank that fueled algea and diatoms. I was hoping yo make some nice simple and cheap racks. Oh well took them all out and moved onto store bought. For now

Best advice I got was to leave everything alone. Atop putting your hands in the tank, stop messing with the flow, and stop messing with the light settings

We haven’t….yet. We are wanting to build our own stand for the tank instead of it just sitting on our coffee table. We also want to DIY a sump after new years. We also thought about possibly putting it above tank level for gravity purposes to “simplify” setup. Has anyone had any experience with it set up that way?

Cycle your tank with some mature biomedia and/or actual live rock! Hands down the best advice I've got. I was prepared for a 2-3 month initial cycling. Had that down to a week after I got biomedia from his tank, some more from a LFS, and a bunch of mature caribsea rocks. Tank was stable after I added all those. I'm starting another tank and I was able to get my hands on some Salty Bottom Reef rocks, there's bivalves, sponges, and feather duster worms alive and doing well. It's less than a week old.
