TANK TALK: Regarding aquarium equipment, what is one piece of advice you would give to another aquarist?

When it comes to aquarium equipment it's similar to advice I've received for other things: buy once cry one!

Buy what you can afford, don't try to skimp on equipment. You don't have to buy the most expensive but the cheapest isn't always worth the headache.

When it comes to pumps, buy bigger flow that what you think you will need.

Alot of good stuff has been said already. I’d add, but backup of the important stuff in case something goes out, also buy used when possible to try to save some money.

TANK TALK: For those of you who have had both DIY screen lids and professional polycarbonate Top Lids, what have been the biggest differences for you?

I don't have either but from what I can see, it doesn't look like there are too much differences. I would say the main difference is the look to it. Professional lids looks like it was professionally done and nicer lol.

My advice would be if your trying to size your equipment, the right size is adequate, but if you can, try to go bigger. You're better off oversizing than under-sizing.

Lights matter - buy 2nd hand if you need to but buy good lights

To think long term not short term. We learned the hard way. Spend the extra now instead of paying double later.

1. Buy what you can afford,
2. Have critical equipment backups, IE Heaters and pumps.
3. Have a source of power in case of extended power outage.

Oh man, I didn't think I'd be showing this off to anyone ever. First attempt at a DIY lid like 1 week into reefing:

quarantine.......quarantine everything that touches water

Official entry. I love the plank feeder. Just bought a 200 cylinder. And yes I need another plank for it, the best feeder on the market period!

I like hawk fish the best never had one jump out on me but I love the way they just kind of lurk in the tank....

I got rookie mistakes...trying to listen and do everything! I finally decided to just slow down and figure it out instead of the newest and latest and greatest.

Nest piece of advice I got was BE PATIENT...this is not a hobby to rush. Yeah the fish and corals are cool and you want to get there. But if the tanks not ready, it's just not worth risking it.

Quick note on equipment. Redundancy. Something will fail in the middle of a snow storm at 2 am...make sure you have a back up. Trust me on this. Especially heaters and pumps.
