TANK TALK: Have you guys checked out the REEF2REEF TOY DRIVE? If not, CLICK HERE! What a great thing that this reef community does every year!
It's definitely an awesome thing to do. Imagine the kids hearing that a reef group banded together and donated so they could have Christmas.

Its fantastic to see a community come together and donate to a good cause. I have donated and hope the rest of you can as well. Every amount helps big or small.

TANK TALK: If you won this contest, what animal do you feel you’d be better equipped to successfully keep?
Can this answer be twofold? Gonna say I could get wrasse (lids) or anthias (feeder) and keep them more successfully. that's to say nothing of the tangs that are always hungry.

But with that freedom from worry and more time comes the ability to feed my family better.

Wrasses! ALL the wrasses!

I ordered 4 new ones already for the occasion
It’s brings my heart so much joy to watch him gobble it all up. TBH, it was never much about the fish for me..(my husband and kids adore them) I enjoyed the coral more. The new foxface, has turned that attitude a bit.

TANK TALK: Share a challenging scenario you've faced in your reefkeeping journey. It could be an unexpected algae bloom, equipment malfunction, or a tricky water parameter issue. How did you troubleshoot the problem?
I'm a newbie to the reefing hobby. One of the most challenging parts to any hobby is deciphering between all the beliefs and opinions that differ. Some which reach the same goals and others that completely miss the mark! That has been challenging for me!

I did some initial research and felt my startup/cycling plan was figured out. In retrospect, I really wish I would have started on this forum earlier. Anyway...I was ready! I am going to finally do this. I waited and searched for something I could afford and make this dream a reality.

I found myself a great deal on a small fluval 13.5 and I got started. Everything I was being told and regurgitated was that it will be 1-3 months before my tank is ready for any livestock. End all be all statements, so in my mind I was prepared for that.

I can do a near instant cycle on a FW tank by using mature sponge filters or biomedia. Literally have livestock in the same day! Which got me thinking...why can't I do the same with saltwater?

Then I spoke with someone with much more experience than I. He walked me through similar logic. I was already about a week in. I had initially started with live sand which did help. Then my buddy gave me a small bag of mature biomedia and a damsel (still alive). On top of that, I purchased some wet cycled rock from a LFS. This was a total of 6 days.

Day 7, I purchased some more mature biomedia from another LFS. That samdaddy, I had them do a water test for me. Everything was looking decent except ammonia was slightly elevated and my salinity was a tad low. I did a major water change, as instructed, and introduced my first coral that evening! This particular tank is only 1 month old!

I don't mean to knock or speak ill of folks that believe in a long term cycling process, but it is definitely not necessary to wait that long before introducing livestock. Now that I better understand the cycling process and speaking with other folks. I should have waited to add the fish until the very end since they have the largest bioload. Corals first, then inverts/cuc, then fish. Gives all the bacteria an opportunity to colonize and reproduce.

Oh geeze! I recently tried gently tapping my food container to feed my 4 fish. One too many taps and too much of an angle and about 100 pellets came rushing out! Most made it into the filter media thankfully but it still has caused issues with phosphates and nitrates. Slowly changing water more often for the past week.

TANK TALK: Do you currently (or have in the past) use another type of autofeeder? What are its limitations? What key feature would you like to see in an autofeeder?
I have never owned one actually. I've considered one for our 100g Mbuna tank but we get a lot of joy from feeding them. Knowing we have a solution if we forget or need to leave for a few days is something we need to consider. This brings me to my reef tanks. I would definitely like to get one setup on my current build. I think it would be nice to be able to monitor feedings remotely. A wifi enabled feeder that is able to be programmed to know what size pellets it has and roughly how many pellets to feed at various intervals.
