Oh boy…
Another day, another catastrophe.
This morning, I think one of my clove polyps got sucked into the powerhead and shredded—causing all my stony corals to melt…
I did a massive water change which should hopefully correct things. My newest frogspawn, unfortunately, is in isolation with suspected brown jelly disease. I’ve treated it with everything I’ve got, but it’s 50-50 on whether it will survive…
I really hope it does. My wallet cannot take another loss…
I feel you!

Things went from bad to worse last night, and my euphyllia needed to be moved into the fish quarantine tank (thankfully there are no dangerous meds in there at the moment). I did a 50% water change in the DT, and hopefully everything recovers. I have no idea what happened here, as I was gone most of yesterday, but clearly it was terrible.

Looks like things are going back to square one in lps land.

I just finished my third water change, and at this point almost all stony corals are in the hospital tank and in critical condition (except for my torch and a few others, which are still in the DT and in okay condition, though not perfect). Unfortunately, I think I can declare that my leptoseris is deceased, as there are no more signs of life on the skeleton, even when I turn on blues. Quite unfortunate, as this one took a while to grow to a large size. I also have doubts that the birdsnest or pavona will pull through, though I think all the euphyllia will be fine (some have lost a head or two but are otherwise opening back up). Only time will tell if this issue corrects itself. Pretty soon I will be setting the Fluval 13.5 back up, possibly for a mantis shrimp, and I think I’ll be rehoming all the soft corals there. I’m beginning to learn why very few people stick with a mixed reef setup.

This whole thing was definitely unexpected, and sad to say the least. Something tells me I’ll need to do more water changes before this issue is fully resolved. I suppose this hobby can never be easy…

Water change #4 was quite the experience. I forgot to unplug the heater, so when I smelled burning plastic and algae, I looked and saw a white hot heater. Thankfully I unplugged it before it fell into the water, shattering and letting off quite a lot of steam. I burned my fingers quite badly getting the heater out of the tank, but my bigger concern is whether or not this will affect the tank life—as if things couldn’t get worse. So until I get a new heater, my tank will be running at room temperature.

Oh man... I've done that before. Glad you caught it (and sorry about the burns) before it was worse. I have a couple of backups from Petco since they were like $10-15 online and I assume they'll die or I'll break them at the worst possible time.

I finally bring some good news!! The fourth water change seems to be the one, and the torch and other lps are now on the road to recovery!

Additionally, I looked in the quarantine tank this morning to be surprised by my leptoseris, with new flesh starting to grow over the skeleton! I guess it had some life left in it after all!

That torch is stunning!
And Luxo seems to be behaving normal… for now.

Thanks! In just a year, the torch went from a tiny Frag to an 11-head beast, and surprisingly has been one of my hardiest corals!!

Luxo is… Luxo. Definitely behaved in the sense that she didn’t kill anything in the past few days, but still bites my hand when I go too close and even jumps out of the water to try and attack me. I fear for Sharkbait and Venom in the Quarantine Tank, who will be going in next week…

Fingers crossed… also we need updated photos of Sharkbait and Venom!

They’re doing good! A little confused by all the corals in their tank, but definitely both healthy and happy. Algae in the quarantine tank has gotten really bad ever since the orange spotted blenny passed away, though.

Hopefully the Algae passes by and it’s just a short time thing.

Hopefully the algae does go away. The good thing is that I won’t be needing the quarantine tank for a while after the fish move out, so I no longer have to worry about maintaining it for quite some time, and can focus back to one tank.

Today, Venom and Sharkbait are welcomed into the display tank!!

Given the recent death of the Hawkfish, I decided that it’d be best to isolate Luxo from the group, and hopefully she’ll get used to her new friends before I release her back into the tank. Let’s just say that she isn’t too happy about her new territory….

Something interesting I’ve noticed—ever since Luxo was put by herself, all my other fish have become more active….
For example, Eve the goby actually swims around the tank—something she hasn’t done in a very long time.
I think I may need to reconsider if Luxo should even be given a chance in the tank…

I had algae problems terribly that actually made me leave the hobby... Caulerpa Prolifera has reeeaally helped. I do some extra dry pellet feedings sometimes making sure it has enough nutrients but it has really helped my algae problems.

Brief update:
Luxo and Sharkbait seem to have bonded really well so far! They both take turns hosting the torch coral, and seem to stick together more often than not! Let’s hope that Luxo doesn’t teach Sharkbait to also bite my hand!!

Cool!
I only have one clown and she's best buds with a bicolor blenny.
Been tempted to get another clown but too afraid to cause massive calamity so haven't gotten up the nerve.
