This link below is to a scientific paper talking about various aspects of good vs bad bacteria and algae and nutrient levels as well as control methods. Figured people here would like to read some proper science on the topics, I sure did.

Some take aways I got from the article:

Carbon levels being high and bateria and algae diversity being low help turn normally harmless or beneficial bacteria into detrimental versions of themselves, so its not only the type of algae/bacteria in your tank, its the environment influencing it that causes problems

Water changes are the only full proof way to reduce high carbon levels besides having living organisms that sequester it.

Typical refugiums may create more harm than good for certain problems.
