My hubby read where our utility co charge 2x for electric use during peak hrs 4pm-8pm. My lights comes on 7am - 8pm with ramping. He ask me if I want to consider modify ing my light schedule to come earlier than 7am and off earlier so we can save some $$. Your thoughts
I’d alter my pool pump to run in off peak hours, but not my reef tank lights. Only live once, can’t enjoy the reef while you’re still sleeping.

I'd adjust the lighting period, but only if you can enjoy the tank during those periods, otherwise all the money we spend on our tanks is worth nothing if the lights are only on when we can't see it.

You have a very good point. The reason hubby even brought it up is that we both work from home and we both wake up at 5:30am for work
What time do you go to bed though? Probably matters if you look at your tank more in the morning or before lights out.

So instead of 13 hour period, your paying for 17 hours.

Honestly I wouldn't, but electricity is cheap here. Not sure what you rates are but figure up what 4 hours a day cost. Mine would be about 18 cents a day for 4 hours my 75 if I ran it at 100% which I don't.

Same boat. My lights come on at 6am, i typically dont catch sunrise on the reef until we move the clocks forward, but its a happy medium so im not blinding the family watching a movie after dinner.

I guess my point is simply if it makes sense to adjust it go for it but I know that i would pay the premium since i put so much energy into the hobby already, i want to enjoy it on my terms. One last point - if youre not at peak are you just paying for ramp down and atinics in this analysis anyway? Its likely immaterial

Get up 5:30am. Usually eat dinner at 5:30pm. Tidy up and everyone shower at around 7 or so. We all upstairs in our beds with our ipads/tablets at about 8pm. Bed time at about 9pm or so. Schedule varies a bit late during weeks or something comes up

Summer peak is $.27/kw. Winter peak is $.13/kw. Peak time is 4pm-8pm. Of peak for both summer and winter is $.07/kw

Side note, id suggest people do slightly adjust their lighting schedules with the seasons. I've read that is what people that are experimenting with corals spawning do.

Sounds like you’d actually see the tank more with the earlier schedule

Ours is $.15 for the first 300kWh used a cycle, $.11 for the next 400kWh, and $.10 from there, not sure if there's another decrease, never used that much.

But we also have connection charges and riders and then credits that nearly cancel those out....

So off 1 or 2 hrs earlier won't make a huge difference

For me no, but your rates... I don't know the amount of kw your lights use (guessing 1000watts total?) but would $16 a month during peak make a difference in the summer? Actually less than that because you still pay off peak rates if you just shift the photoperiod.
