So sorry, that sucks big time! Unfortunately, more casualties are probably coming, some acros hang on for awhile before giving up. I don’t know how big the acros were that died but if they were good size colonies, all that die off puts a lot of funk in the water. Doing water changes are always a good course of action. A water change and no dosing for a day or two (depending on new alk demand) should bring it down to where you want it. Get it stabilized first and then worry about the nutrients which may spike up on their own anyways with the die off and lower nutrient demand.Well, had my first major issue and die off since I've been back in the hobby. I got home from work yesterday and saw quite of few of my acros not looking too well. Checked parameters and everything was good except my alk increased from 8.2 on Saturday to 11.3 yesterday. Calcium increased by 30 ppm. I checked my AFR doser and it appears to be working fine. I'm not sure if the doser had a short-term malfunction and dumped too much AFR at some point, or if my AFR calculations on my last batch that I recently made were off. I don't think that's the case though since I've made a few batches of AFR over the past year. I plan on making a new batch just in case.
As of last night, I had lost 13 corals, all acros. I had several of them for over a year. I checked the tank this morning before the lights were on and see that I lost another acro overnight, and a monti cap and monti digi have lost some flesh in areas as well. Luckily, for now at least, the LPS and softies look good except for the grim reaper zoas.
Should I do a water change to reduce the ALK, or just adjust dosing to gradually bring it down? I don't want to cause any other issues and I struggle keeping nutrients detectable so if I don't have to do a water change, I'd like to avoid it. I'll definitely do it though if that's the recommended course of action.
I wish.
