I've also read lanthanum chlorine messes them up and kills them. But that can crash phosphates and be harmful to fish.

I saw that and didn't feel like going into the facts of that. Not gonna work in the real world. He had a colony in like a 10 gallon tank with 30 or so peppermint and the tank wasn't being fed.
