No3- .05 Salifert
PO4- 0 API

Theres the problem.

Looks like you have dinoflagellates. Welcome to the club!

You need to get your PO4 up to 0.08ppm and your NO3 to about 8ppm.

When they have no N and P to eat they will bloom like that and photosynthesize their own food.

To stop the plague you will need to do a 72-120 hour lights out.

That's a long time for the Reefbrites to be on....check this out: Big E Rimless 80g Sps

This isn't an answer to your algae/slime issue, but just food for thought on the lighting. :)

I'll check that out thanks! I just got the reefbrite so I'm still dialing it in.

Agreed. If the leds aren't on a ramp it might be too much. I'm on a 14hr + too.

It's not the cause though. I'd have to go with young tank.

If you can get a big scrub done and check the po4.

That's gha. And I Have a tank with less nutints in it so....

Also if you calculate the error in a hobby grade test kit that balance can never actually be reached.

I've been dosing KNO3, should I feed heavy and dose? And turn the lights out?

I'm with tsav87, that looks very much to be dinos. If you can get some under a microscope that would be huge.

Wish I could, but I don't have a microscope. If we all agree on lights out, then I'll start there and report back in 72 hours. All those in favor say "Ay" oppose say "nay"! lol I just want the stuff gone guys, it's been a couple months now I think.

No point in doing a lights out if you don't change anything else. It will come right back.

Do you agree with raising No3 and PO4 and going lights out?
No. I'd say your directly feeding the algae.

The lights out will slow the growth. But you'll be tuning them back on.

IMO I've seen the imbalance thing come and go for the entire time I've been reefing like a fad. But most of the scientific articles on reefkeeping and r Farley doubt it highly.
I'm still waiting to see any proof of of it.

Most of the imbalance cures I've seen have involved normal or better husbandry And gfo. In a few rare occasions yes some organisms multiply to the point where they have taken over a system and tapped out either n or p so no others. Can compete with it.
Call that an imbalance problem I guess but I'd rather just scrub the tank and remove the organism.

My Dino looked pretty much exactly like that. Always returned after lights out for me. I use vibrant to keep it knocked back but it didn't work for everyone. The Dino threads now seem to be increasing nitrates and phosphates. Not sure how well it works as I haven't been following as closely.

Agreed on the test kits. BUT it ensures the levels aren't depleted. Thats the point.
I have a tank that that registers all zero. I put stuff from the ocean in it. I should have Dino's.
