The brain is a powerful thing. When you no longer have a frame of reference for direct visual comparison, the brain both forgets and fills in the blanks.

Watch a baseball game (or movie) on a 40 year old TV. At first the shock of how “bad” it is may be hard to not see. Twenty minutes in, your just watching a tv, the brain fills in the blanks.

You think your cell phone calls sound good. If you could compare your current cell phone voice quality in one ear with a coast to coast call 40 years ago using Sprint’s analog copper network and a Bell 500 handset in the other, your mind would explode. You would never use a cell phone again if you had the choice. It is THAT bad.

The point is, that your mind adapts to whatever is at hand.
Huh? My radiums are on right now next to LEDs? Mind ain’t adapting brother. This ain’t 8-bit gaming vs. 4k at 160 fps.

No that is the point. Both are in the same frame of reference and of course you can tell the difference. If I took either away, long term you start to lose that frame of reference, the brain adapts to try to give you the experience you expect.

@BeanAnimal I joined the forum a while ago but I do not live on it. Are you the one who originally came up with the bean animal style overflow? I feel like I've just met a celeb.
That's him.. look up his work with bacon...
Tough guy to argue, even if you're right, but a pretty good guy none the less

I am not sure what that is. My only celebrity is my wing eating record at a local bar 25 years ago… brass plaque on the wall and everything.

I knew if I shared a few opinions on radiums it would draw out the neuroscientist in you..

Ok..note taken...when I run out of bulbs, delete all pictures/videos of my corals to forget the Radium experience.

This sounds like it could be a movie!

Well photos and videos present another issue of the brain having to fill in the blanks too…so no need to delete :astonished-face:

Gosh my thought exactly. For the Iwasaki 6500k report, I am going to start my own thread and kick out everyone who's brining a hot potato into my thread.
History.. a little of everything..starting with some 6500k data.

Kind of like when the mind adapts when you're driving a prius and forget that you're in a prius.

What if I keep a Radium bulb forever and just burn it brightly 1 day per year? I don't want to forget...
Constant starts and stops will quickly take mercury salts out of vapor and create deposits…. All of that sitting around in storage will also take its toll. But maybe once per year you will be fine. Now what happens when you leave a fingerprint on it or drop it on year two or three?

Yes you are a celeb. I never knew I would have a opportunity to speak with "big names" lol. How and where can I get your autograph? I currently use your style overflow for my DT. Thank you for your contribution to our hobby! Massive amount of respect for you!

I was really enjoying this thread when the discussion was about past and present experiences with different ballasts, fixtures and bulbs (and personal preferences). I am particularly happy to hear about new sources for MH bulbs and appreciate people sharing the news. To me, the debate posts are clutter. I can appreciate others have their thing and I wish them luck. It’s just my thing is MH and this thread was interesting to me before the criticisms and debate sidetracked it.

I agree that this thread has became pain to read due to criticism and sarcasm.

We have 2 continuing threads all about halides(availability, compatibility, preference and where people can get a quick response to halide questions), that's it. 2. I can't comprehend why anybody is talking about/ defending/promoting anything other than that. Can't we have 1 thread? 2? We are here to discuss halides amongst ourselves, Trying to preserve our lighting of choice from the brink of extinction. Anything but is a distraction, opposition to our freedom of choice between technologies. There's a thousand threads talking about led, you don't see us doing that there
