Found some pictures of my first sw tank....oceanic 58 gal with trickle filter and what I thought was coral at the time. Skimmer was an oceanic too - those old gray ones. No RODI, and filter was full of bio balls. Everything turned green quickly, but the fish lived. I eventually sold it. Time frame ~2001 I think.

The quintessential saltwater tank! I love it!
(It looked really nice, btw)

Awesome thread!! Wish I had my pics from pre2000. I remember when the LFS was selling these huge boxes called turf scrubbers- newest technology on the block-they were supposed to be the key to success, but my water always had that yellowish tint to it

When I first started in the salt world all of the info was coming out of Germany, books on how to build your under gravel filter and use air stone to create the flow. I'll have to look and see if I have any pics of that first 65tall tank. It wasn't till the late 90's I think that I was talking to people about switching to a wet/ dry filter systems and started to see the canister filters. This hobby has come a long way since I started to try and keep corals.

My 200 gallon Oceanic, somewhere around 1985. I had a massive DIY wet-dry filter and a 20 gallon ATO inside the cabinet, but I don't think I ever took any pictures of it. This is before we started using live rock. As you can see, we did still use eggcrate back then. :) That is how I kept my fish in the tank, since I got tired of dealing with cleaning the massive glass tops.

These are all new tanks...lol. I have to find a pic of my tank from the early 70's. Before skimmers and bio balls.

Here is mine, still running since 1971.

This is about 1977 where I moved and brought everything from that old 40 with me and put it into it's present 100. You can see we were still using dead bleached coral then. I installed this tank and built the basement around it as it is not finished here.

This blue devil is over his nest of eggs in that tank circa 1973

This picture of my tank appeared in FAMMA magazine in the 80s or 90s, I forget.

These coral banded shrimp spawned for me for about 7 years in the 70s.
