Cryptocaryon, or Marine Ich, is one of the most controversial components of fish illness. They are a sure sign that something in your tank was improperly quarantined, if at all. We have all had it, well most of us have. Ich has been often times confused with it's unrelated freshwater version that is a completely different monster. So here is the test! What is true and what is false?

1. Marine Ich is always present no matter what.
2. Garlic will kill Marine Ich.
3. There are Reef Safe cures.
4. It can come on anything Wet

Go! If you get all 4 right you are a great reefer!

1. False. After I won the Ich battle with my noob tank, I now QT and treat everything, so I can say my current reef tank is Ich free, has been so for more than 3 years.
2. False. Garlic can increase fish appetite (and mine, too!), help the immune system, but won't kill Ich.
3. False. I've tried almost all of them, if not all, and none worked.
4. Define "wet" :) . Also, define "true" vs "false". I guess that sounded like good 'ole Bill at the White House. But, yeah, it could be true, like wet live rock with the Ich cyst on them. It could also be false, like wet bare coral or a wet slug will not have Ich on it. So, if you define "false" as any statement that could be wrong in any sense and therefore false as a whole, then my answer is "false".

Did I win a prize? LOL!!!

Wet- submersed in liquid, sprayed with liquid, or dripped on by liquid

True- kinda not wrong ;)

So far we have some debate still. Let's round in some more answers and then reveal the truth behind ich!

Palting, you are correct, so I guess you get the prize. A fully paid, all expenses paid trip to Bora Bora for 3 weeks. And If I am wrong about the answers, (or even if I am right) I am out of here because I don't get involved in ich threads. But have a nice trip. :second:

Thats a good set of plane tickets there!

The answers are correct!
Ich is eradicatable
Ich is not deterred by garlic
Ich is not curable in a reef safe form besides complete removal of fish, which is not sold in stores.
And the final answer is yes, ich can travel between systems via liquid transferred on something as small as a fly's foot!!! If a fly lands on your water it has the (very, very slim) chance of carrying ich all the way to another house and drop it in their tank. Ich is not as likely as using the same glass scraper between tanks but you never know. Tiny organisms of extreme hardiness that can handle temps much wider than any tropical fish are very capable of long distance travel.

Anyone recommend a good general dip? I have had success with lugols and then Qt for observation before adding to the tank but most of the stuff I get already has been taken care of for me.
