Good reaction this, kudos!
Some myths are hard to kill, especially when vendors/shops are giving the false information. Shops earn more with this info, after selling the clam they can sell a lot of phyto this way. Luckily phyto is normally only good for an aquarium even if its not directly helping the clams.
Indeed! I believed the myth myself. I love these threads!

I raised Crocea from 1 inch and Maxima from around 1 inch+ without feeding them. I had some Reed aquaculture concentrated phyto (from raising clownfish days) and used them to feed clams but really did not see any differences so I stop.
If you want to feed phyto, buy the concentrated frozen phyto from Reed Aquaculture. You get a lot more for much cheaper than phyto in a bottle. I use this phyto to raise rotifer for my baby clowns with no problem. Three hatches and I got about 1000 fry. Took me several years to get them all sold. Due to this reason I know that the concentrate phyto is really good.

If 4 of the 5 clams are doing well then it likely not the water, but something wrong with that specific clam.
Look at the shells, is there recent growth for all the clams, perhaps except for that one?

Agreed. The cam just was not doing well. Each day it look a little worse to the point it had no mantel expansion at all. I just took it out of the tank. I don't know if it had anything on it, but if it died I didn't need to pollute my tank not have whatever was on go looking for a new host. All 4 of the other clams are still doing fine with nice lines of crisp white shell growth visible under the mantels :).
